There is a lot of talk about Secretary of Defense James Mattis at one of Washington D.C.’s major social events Monday night, where he suddenly got up and left. A lot of people were confused with the abrupt departure, and looked into the issue.

The reason why is rocking the nation:

VIA| Secretary of Defense James Mattis was at Alfalfa Club Dinner, one of Washington D.C.’s major social events Monday night, when he suddenly got up and left.

The reason why has now become clear.

Mattis had received news about the first clandestine raid undertaken under President Donald Trump against al Qaeda.

The mission taken by Joint Special Operations Command, was allegedly to obtain computer equipment with valuable intelligence and involved “boots on the ground” at an al Qaeda camp near al Bayda in south central Yemen.

The mission did not go well. According to Independent Journal Review, a senior U.S. military official told NBC News that “almost everything went wrong.”

An MV-22 Osprey experienced a hard landing near the site, injuring several SEALs, one severely. The tilt-rotor aircraft had to be destroyed. A SEAL was killed during the firefight on the ground, as were some noncombatants, including females.

The senior military official said the 8-year-old girl, Nawar al-Awlaki, also known as Nora, was among the noncombatants killed in the raid, which also resulted in the death of several Yemeni women. U.S. officials said some of the women who were killed, however, were combatants and had opened fire on the SEALs as they approached the al Qaeda camp.

In a statement, Mattis identified the SEAL who was killed as Chief Petty Officer William “Ryan” Owens.
