The elderly man who was the victim of a politically motivated attack in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is now recovering at home, according to law enforcement officials.
The suspect responsible for the attack has been identified as Joshua Kemppainen, a 22-year-old resident of Quincy Township.
The incident occurred when an individual driving an ATV targeted signs and images supporting law enforcement and former President Donald Trump in Hancock, Michigan.
The suspect damaged vehicles displaying Trump or “thin blue line” stickers and also attacked an 80-year-old man who had Trump signs on his front lawn.
After tearing down the signs, the suspect ran over the elderly man from behind with the ATV, resulting in serious injuries including a brain bleed.
However, there is some positive news regarding the victim’s condition as he was released from the hospital on Wednesday night and is expected to recover at home.
Following these events, law enforcement received a call from someone believed to be Kemppainen confessing to a crime involving an ATV driver within the last 24 hours and asking to be picked up by authorities.
Upon arriving at Kemppainen’s residence in Quincy Township, law enforcement officers found him dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
They also discovered the ATV which was believed to have struck the elderly man, along with clothing matching what was seen on surveillance images of the suspect.
Furthermore, digital devices found at Kemppainen’s property will undergo forensic analysis at the Michigan State Crime Lab in Marquette with hopes of shedding light on his mindset or modus operandi.
