As grocery and restaurant prices keep squeezing household budgets, a new ranking from the food site Tasting Table points to five lesser-expected restaurant chains delivering real breakfast value for the money.
Tasting Table reviewed 12 breakfast chains overall, including familiar giants like McDonald’s, Starbucks and Dunkin’, judging them on affordability, accessibility, rewards programs, menu variety and convenience. Five picks stood out as surprises.
Caribou Coffee
With about 490 locations concentrated mainly in the Midwest, Caribou Coffee made the list for prices that undercut many competitors: $2 hot coffee, a $3.50 cold brew and a $4 breakfast sandwich. Tasting Table also credited the chain for dropping the surcharge on dairy-free milk and for its rewards program. On Reddit, fans frequently praise the Chicken Apple Sausage sandwich and the Just Egg Flatbread.
IHOP
IHOP’s breakfast menu goes well beyond pancakes, with several options under $6, according to Tasting Table. The chain, now under 2,000 U.S. locations with its heaviest presence in California and Texas, also earned praise for a rewards program that lets members stack points toward free items, claim free pancakes on their birthday, and access other special offers.
Burger King
Burger King’s breakfast lineup includes French toast sticks starting around $1 and breakfast sandwiches under $5, plus app-based rewards and discounts, Tasting Table found. On a Reddit forum devoted to food questions, commenters praised the chain’s Croissan’wich, with one user saying it beats McDonald’s Egg McMuffin.
Wendy’s
After years of refining its breakfast offerings, Wendy’s has become a value standout, the outlet reported. Across roughly 5,700 locations nationwide, breakfast sandwiches and combo meals typically run between $5 and $10, backed by the chain’s rewards app. Reddit users singled out the Breakfast Baconator, the Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit and seasoned potatoes, calling Wendy’s breakfast “underrated.”
Waffle House
Rounding out the list, Waffle House earned praise for generous portions and affordable pricing: breakfast sandwiches under $9, hash browns for less than $5, and a rewards program offering coupons, specials and free food. Many diners consider the chain’s All-Star Special the top value pick, with some Redditors joking the meal has become their personal “inflation tracker.”
