The State Department issued a Level 2 “Exercise Increased Caution” advisory for Cambodia on September 15, warning Americans about crime, unrest and unexploded ordnance across the country.
Cambodia, in Southeast Asia, borders Thailand, Vietnam and Laos. While the country as a whole sits at Level 2, several areas carry the department’s highest Level 4 “Do Not Travel” designation.
Americans are told to avoid areas along the Cambodian-Thai border entirely because of unrest. In the capital, Phnom Penh, the advisory calls for increased caution due to crime. Seven provinces — Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Pursat, Siem Reap, Pailin, Preah Vihear and Kampong Thom — carry heightened warnings because of unexploded ordnance still in the ground.
For those who go anyway, the department’s guidance is blunt:
“Do not physically resist any robbery attempt.”
Officials also recommend travel insurance that covers medical care, evacuation and trip cancellation.
Drug laws in Cambodia carry no leniency. The State Department describes a “zero-tolerance policy for drug offenses,” meaning even small amounts of illegal drugs can lead to arrest and detention. Convictions can bring lengthy prison terms — including life sentences, officials warn.
Travelers are also told to be careful about what they drink. “Crimes targeting tourists often involve drugged drinks,” the advisory states. “Do not accept drinks from strangers and do not leave drinks unattended.”
The Cambodia advisory follows a similar update earlier this month for Italy, where the State Department flagged terrorism risks and warned about petty crime such as purse snatching and pickpocketing in tourist areas and on public transit. Americans traveling there were told to stay alert, watch local news and be ready to change plans on short notice.
