Mike Pompeo pushed a simple point on Fox: Russia needs far tougher consequences for aggression, and America should lead that pressure without apologizing. This piece unpacks why that stance matters now and what a clear Republican approach to deterrence looks like in practice.

On Monday’s broadcast of the Fox News Channel’s “Fox & Friends,” Fox News Contributor former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stated that “Vladimir Putin’s going to need to be hit with a lot bigger stick before he’s prepared to actually

Pompeo’s fragment landed because it captures a basic truth: weakness invites risk. Too many in Washington still debate nuance while adversaries test our limits, and Republicans must be blunt about deterrence and strength.

First, stronger economic penalties have to be on the table and enforced without loopholes. Smart sanctions combined with real consequences for sanctions evasion will squeeze Moscow’s capacity and deter future aggression.

Second, military support for allies should be robust and unambiguous, not tentative. Supplying clear defensive capabilities and coordinating with NATO sends a message that America will back its partners and that aggression has immediate costs.

Third, energy policy is national security policy, plain and simple. Encouraging global energy markets that reduce Europe’s dependence on hostile suppliers undermines leverage Putin can exploit, and conservative policy should push for American energy leadership.

Fourth, diplomacy must be backed by credible force. Talk without preparation for decisive action is just noise, and a Republican foreign policy insists on pairing negotiation with readiness so adversaries know the stakes.

Domestic unity on foreign policy strengthens our position overseas because our adversaries watch our politics. When Republicans argue for a clear, no-nonsense posture, the message is that America will not reward bad behavior and will hold the line for allies and democratic values.

Practical steps are straightforward: tighten enforcement on sanctions, accelerate delivery of defensive systems to vulnerable partners, deepen intelligence-sharing with allies, and expand energy exports where possible. These moves are not reckless; they are calculated measures to protect American interests and keep peace through strength.

Finally, leadership matters. A party that projects resolve can shape outcomes without escalating conflicts unnecessarily, because deterrence is about credibility rather than endless intervention. Standing firm now deters tomorrow’s wars and preserves freedom for allies who count on American resolve.
