Paul Pelosi was involved in a hit-and-run incident in Yountville, California, where deputies say his convertible struck a parked vehicle before coming to rest disabled nearby. Officials report no alcohol was detected, investigators believe Pelosi caused the collision, and the matter will be forwarded to the county prosecutor and the DMV for review. This episode comes after a prior 2022 misdemeanor drunken driving conviction and follows the high-profile 2022 home attack that left him seriously injured.

Law enforcement in Napa County responded after a witness described a brown convertible striking an unoccupied parked car and continuing northbound. Deputies later located the damaged convertible partially blocking the road and identified the driver as Paul Pelosi, age 86. The scene prompted the usual follow-up steps for a collision involving a parked vehicle and a driver who left the scene.

During the investigation, deputies say Pelosi admitted he realized he had hit something but claimed he did not know what it was, and he drove until the vehicle became disabled. Authorities concluded that he was responsible for the collision and chose not to arrest him at the scene, noting that officers often refer misdemeanor cases to prosecutors instead of making an immediate arrest. The county will review the facts and decide whether to pursue charges through the district attorney’s office.

“The investigation also determined that no alcohol (.00 on Preliminary Alcohol Screening Device) was detected upon testing, therefore Driving Under the Influence was ruled out,” the sheriff’s office said, according to the official account. That statement removes DUI as a factor in this crash, distinguishing it from the earlier 2022 case that ended in a guilty plea. Even with alcohol ruled out, other driving-safety issues and legal responsibilities remain squarely on the table.

Officials also confirmed they plan to send a driver re-evaluation referral to the California DMV, a routine step when elderly drivers are involved in crashes. Such evaluations can lead to additional testing, restrictions, or license actions if examiners find a safety risk. From a public-safety standpoint, the DMV referral is an important administrative measure that can protect other motorists if deficiencies are identified.

The 2022 incident in Napa County resulted in a misdemeanor drunken driving conviction for Pelosi, and he received probation, short jail time largely satisfied through credits, a DUI education program, an ignition interlock requirement, and financial penalties. That history makes this latest case politically sensitive and raises questions in conservative circles about consistency in enforcement for high-profile figures. Republicans arguing for equal application of the law will point to both the prior conviction and the decision-making here as a test of accountability.

This event arrives in the shadow of the October 2022 home invasion that severely injured Pelosi after an assailant broke into the residence seeking Nancy Pelosi and attacked him with a hammer. The attacker, David DePape, received life in prison on state charges after an earlier federal sentence, and the episode kept Paul Pelosi prominently in the public eye. The contrast between that violent attack and this routine traffic matter underscores how public safety and personal vulnerability intersect in his life.

Authorities did not make an arrest at the scene and will send their findings to the Napa County District Attorney for review and possible prosecution. The decision to refer rather than arrest is standard for many misdemeanor hit-and-run cases, but it leaves open the possibility of charges and court action. With the DMV referral and the prosecutor’s review pending, the matter is now moving through civilian oversight channels rather than immediate criminal detention.
