Republicans are warning that overheated rhetoric from House Democrats about Immigration and Customs Enforcement risks fueling real-world violence while officials dispute claims about conditions at a sprawling Texas family facility. A California Democrat compared ICE to domestic terrorists after a visit, other Democrats demanded the center be closed, and DHS pushed back with a detailed defense of services it says are provided to children and parents.
Rep. Luz Rivas called what she saw at the Texas center personal and powerful, and she made a sharp comparison that grabbed headlines. “for the people of the United States, we don’t want to see our government, or ICE officials, acting like domestic terrorists,” she said in Spanish during a press conference. That line cut through the usual politicking and put Republican leaders on the defensive about rising political temperatures.
The delegation to Dilley was led by Rep. Joaquin Castro and included Rivas and other Democrats who pressed for the facility to be shut down, a demand backed by more than a hundred House colleagues. Lawmakers alleged families, even infants, were housed in degrading conditions and said urgent action was needed. Republicans responded by pointing out the risk of painting federal agents as enemies of the people.
Rep. Ayanna Pressley used the visit to ratchet up language and press a larger political fight over the administration. “It’s so important that we not acquiesce to this, this fascist administration, this dictator in the Oval Office,” Pressley said. She called on Americans to “resist, reject, condemn at every turn.”
GOP officials say that rhetoric crosses a line and could inspire attacks on officers carrying out federal law. Republicans have repeatedly linked aggressive language from some Democrats to a spike in threats and violent incidents directed at ICE personnel this year. Conservative lawmakers insist accountability is one thing, but vilification of agents is another and dangerous for public safety.
Democrats counter that ICE has operated beyond legal bounds and must face consequences, with some calling for sweeping reforms or abolition. “We have to abolish ICE. And then I’m going to take it one step further and say any of those agents that have contributed to and caused the injury, the harm, and even fatalities, they must also be held accountable,” Pressley said. “And we should abolish qualified immunity for these federal law enforcement officers.”
A letter from 111 House Democrats accused Dilley staff and contractors of mistreating migrants and harming children, and those allegations drove much of the pressure for closure. “Parents describe horrendous conditions at Dilley, leading to severe depression, hopelessness, and suicidal ideation amongst their children. Children have reported that their food is often contaminated with worms and mold and that they feel sick after drinking tap water,” the letter said. That language has energized activists and critics alike.
The same letter continued with detailed complaints about lights, sleep disruption, and medical care that lawmakers say prove systemic neglect. “Families also report not being able to sleep at night because the lights are kept on in their rooms throughout the night. … Medical care provided by CoreCivic staff is delayed, denied, and in many cases outright dismissed, even when children are suffering life-threatening medical emergencies.” Those allegations have prompted calls for inspections and oversight from both parties.
Department of Homeland Security pushed back forcefully, saying Dilley is equipped specifically for families and offers services intended to protect children. “The Dilley facility is retrofitted for families. Children have access to teachers, classrooms, and curriculum booklets for math, reading, and spelling. They have access to age-appropriate books, toys, and outdoor activities. All of this is generously funded by the U.S. taxpayer,” DHS said. Officials argue the facility is not a typical detention center and that critics mischaracterize daily life there.
DHS also spelled out items and amenities it says are provided to infants and parents and stressed safety and medical care are part of the package. “Infant care packages include formula, baby food, bottles, diapers, wipes, and hygiene items. The facility also provides sippy cups and cribs. Adults with children are housed in facilities that provide for their safety, security, and medical needs.” For Republicans defending ICE and the DHS posture, those descriptions reinforce the need for measured oversight, not inflammatory rhetoric.
