The sovereigntist Alternative for Germany (AfD) launched a new youth branch in Giessen on Saturday morning and far-left violence broke out as Antifa operatives attacked politicians and police, turning a political launch into a public order crisis. This piece lays out what happened, why the response matters, how it threatens free assembly, and what a sensible, firm reaction should look like from authorities and citizens. Expect a clear, direct look at the implications for local security and democratic norms and a call for accountability rather than excuses.

The AfD organized a public event to introduce its youth wing, a normal part of political life, when groups identifying as Antifa moved in and confronted attendees and officers. Reports said politicians and police were among those targeted, forcing law enforcement to step forward to restore order and protect the right to assemble. That disruption underscores a growing problem: political activity is becoming a risk when the rule of law is not enforced evenly.

Violence directed at elected officials and uniformed personnel is not protest, it is intimidation, and it should be treated that way by prosecutors and police alike. When people who disagree with an idea answer with fists and chaos instead of debate and ballots, they cross a line that strikes at the heart of democratic competition. Authorities have a duty to separate peaceful dissent from criminal behavior and to hold offenders to account so future events can proceed without fear.

There is a clear civil-liberties angle here: free speech and free association are core American values and they matter abroad too, especially when democratic systems are under strain. The AfD, described correctly here as sovereigntist, has a legal right to organize, and the public space must remain open to all political voices regardless of their position. Allowing violent disruption to become a tool of censorship sets a dangerous precedent and hands victory to the loudest, most lawless actors instead of voters.

The political fallout will be predictable: some will downplay the violence as merely the cost of politics, while others will weaponize it for partisan gain. Both reactions are unhelpful; what is needed is even-handed law enforcement and a clear political repudiation of mob tactics from across the spectrum. If mainstream leaders refuse to call out street violence, they leave a vacuum that extremists on either side will fill, and that harms civic life and public safety.

Giessen deserves better than a weekend that turned civic engagement into a battleground, and the lesson should be simple—protect events, prosecute criminals, and rebuild the civic norms that let people argue peacefully. Local officials should tighten coordination to protect political gatherings and ensure police have the legal tools necessary to stop and deter organized attacks. Citizens who value free debate should speak up, demand accountability, and refuse to accept violence as the new normal in public life.
