It’s no secret that the U.S.-Mexico border is in crisis mode. Drug cartels are flooding the border with deadly fentanyl, and the Biden administration has done little to stop it.
At a recent Senate Oversight Committee hearing, Republican Texas Sen. John Cornyn grilled Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over the growing fentanyl crisis. And it didn’t go well.
Sen. Cornyn pressed Mayorkas about the alarming amount of fentanyl being smuggled across the border and asked if he would apologize to the families of drug overdose victims. But the DHS secretary refused to take responsibility and offered no apology.
Sen. Cornyn then accused Mayorkas of failing to address the drug crisis and called for his termination.
“You haven’t been fired. You should be fired,” Cornyn said. “Because you were carrying out the policies of the Biden administration, and we’ve seen nothing but death and destruction as a result.”
It’s outrageous that the Biden administration has allowed the U.S.-Mexico border to become a haven for drug traffickers. But it’s even more outrageous that Secretary Mayorkas refuses to take responsibility and apologize to the families of overdose victims.
Instead of making excuses and passing the buck, Mayorkas and the Biden administration need to take action to combat the drug crisis at the border. They need to crack down on cartels and traffickers and provide resources to those affected by their negligence.
The Biden administration has failed to secure the border, and now hundreds of families are paying the price. Secretary Mayorkas should be held accountable for his inaction, and the administration should be held accountable for their lack of leadership. It’s time for them to step up and take responsibility for the crisis they have created.
