Betty Yee has suspended her campaign for California governor after struggling in the polls and facing fundraising shortfalls, leaving the Democratic field reshaped as the June primary nears. Her departure follows Eric Swalwell’s exit amid serious allegations and narrows the pool of credible Democratic options, elevating figures like Katie Porter while opening opportunity for Republican challengers. The race now points to a contest between establishment Democrats and an energized Republican bench ready to make the case to voters seeking fiscal responsibility and government accountability.

Former state Controller Betty Yee announced Monday that she was suspending her campaign after polling consistently showed her support stuck near the margins. “Today I am announcing that my campaign for governor will be suspended,” Yee said in a video announcement. Her message stressed a vision of opportunity and government that earns trust, but the numbers and money did not follow.

Yee never cleared roughly 3 percent in likely-voter surveys, and she acknowledged the hard truth: donors were not lining up for a long and expensive statewide battle. “It was becoming clear that the donors were not going to be there. Even some of my former supporters just felt like they needed to move on,” Yee said, according to reports. That kind of shortfall makes sustaining television buys and field operations virtually impossible in California’s costly media market.

The announcement arrives mere days after embattled former U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell also abandoned his bid amid multiple sexual misconduct allegations, a development that further complicates the Democratic calendar. With high-profile exits and weak fundraising, Democrats risk ceding momentum at a moment when voters are tired of partisan excess. Republicans will point to these stumbles as evidence the party is out of step with voters who want practical leadership on the budget and public safety.

Yee’s campaign leaned heavily on her resume as state controller and a career managing public coffers, touting audits and budget oversight as central credentials. She also highlighted her family’s immigrant roots and a middle-class background in an effort to connect with everyday Californians. Still, experience alone couldn’t overpower a crowded field and a system that rewards early cash and name recognition.

Katie Porter as the primary woman still campaigning for the Democratic nomination. Other notable Democrats who remain include Xavier Becerra and Tom Steyer, both of whom have resources and name recognition but face their own hurdles with voters wary of the status quo.

KEVIN MCCARTHY CALLS GAVIN NEWSOM’S LEADERSHIP A ‘FAILURE,’ WARNS CALIFORNIA IS ON ‘DOWNWARD SLOPE’ On the Republican side, Steve Hilton and Chad Bianco are positioned to capitalize on the Democrats’ weaknesses, making fiscal discipline and government accountability central themes of their pitches. The June 2 primary looms as a test of which message resonates: the familiar Democratic promises or a conservative push for reform and restraint. Voter turnout and fundraising in the remaining weeks will determine who can build the momentum necessary for the fall.

Yee thanked the supporters who stuck with her through a two-year campaign that emphasized steady stewardship of public funds and pragmatic governance. Her public service includes a stint as budget director under former Gov. Gray Davis and time on the State Board of Equalization, roles that shaped her technocratic approach. With her campaign suspended, the field narrows and the spotlight intensifies on those left standing as California voters weigh their options in one of the nation’s most watched state contests.
