Multiple investigations into Dolton, Illinois Mayor Tiffany Henyard, known as ‘the worst mayor in America,’ have been reported.
Henyard is once again embroiled in controversy, this time involving former Deputy Chief Lewis Lacey.
Village officials have indicated that despite being placed on a leave of absence, Lacey continued to report for work and was subsequently terminated by the board.
Three village trustees informed NBC Chicago that Henyard disregarded the board’s decisions regarding Lacey and officially appointed him as the department head, despite him not having been sworn in yet.
Lacey was indicted this week on bankruptcy fraud charges, with prosecutors alleging that he had concealed assets and income from creditors and took steps to prevent payment of a lawsuit settlement.
He was charged with bankruptcy fraud, making false statements and declarations in a bankruptcy case and perjury.
Lacey appeared in court on those charges Thursday, with his lawyer telling reporters that his client is “not guilty” of the charges.
The most recent action taken by Henyard occurred while she is under FBI investigation for abusing her power. This is due to her decision to shut down businesses that did not contribute to her campaign.
In March, Henyard vetoed a unanimously approved investigation by The Dolton Village Board into allegations that she misused funds for lavish expenses and a costly $1 million security detail.
Residents were so worried about Henyard’s actions that a group of Dolton trustees hired former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who failed in her bid for re-election, to conduct an investigation.
At a recent Board of Trustees meeting, former Chicago Mayor Lightfoot presented detailed expenditures from Henyard and other Dolton village officials over the past three years, leaving residents audibly gasping.
The report uncovered a deficit of at least $3.6 million in Dolton, with more than $6 million in additional checks owed to village vendors that the village cannot afford to pay.
Additionally, Lightfoot revealed that the village has not complied with state law by filing annual financial reports.
