It’s no secret that the world of politics is fraught with corruption. From buying and selling votes to insider trading, it’s no wonder that the public’s trust in the government is at an all-time low.
Unfortunately, the latest scandal to rock Washington involves members of Congress trading in stocks they are responsible for writing policies on.
Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida and Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York recently teamed up to introduce legislation that would prohibit members of Congress and their immediate family members from engaging in stock trading.
The Bipartisan Restoring Faith in Government Act is a much-needed step towards thwarting corrupt politicians from profiting from insider trading.
Recent reports have revealed that Democratic Rep. Lois Frankel of Florida was trading in stocks of First Republic Bank, a company that was shut down by regulators just days after she unloaded her shares.
Frankel isn’t the only one being scrutinized for her stock trades. Democratic Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California and Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama have also come under fire for trading in stocks they are responsible for writing policies on.
The public needs to be assured that the laws being passed in Washington are not benefiting a few privileged individuals. This is why it’s so important to have legislation in place that prohibits members of Congress and their immediate family members from engaging in stock trading.
It’s also important to note that Rep. Gaetz has teamed up with Rep. Ocasio-Cortez on this proposed legislation. It goes to show that when it comes to issues like political corruption, party lines don’t matter. Both Democrats and Republicans need to work together to ensure that our government is not so compromised.
No one should be allowed to use their position of power to make a profit.
