Republican members of a House panel pressed Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison hard over a sprawling fraud scandal, zeroing in on when they knew about the problems and what they did once they learned them. Lawmakers demanded specifics, traded sharp words, and accused both officials of failing to protect taxpayer dollars while whistleblowers and court records introduced messy contradictions. The hearing featured pointed exchanges, calls for resignations and even suggestions of impeachment as Republicans argued accountability has been missing in Minnesota’s response.

Walz and Ellison faced repeated Republican questions about the timeline of the fraud, with lawmakers insisting on clear answers about when they were first notified and what actions were taken next. The core demand was simple: who knew what, and when did they know it. Republicans repeatedly suggested the state leadership either mishandled warnings or ignored them outright.

Rep. Virginia Foxx delivered one of the loudest rebukes, telling Walz, “You did not do your job, you did not do your job.” Her frustration echoed through the room as she accused the governor and the attorney general of allowing “massive fraud” that drained public funds and harmed trust in state programs. That blunt condemnation framed the hearing as less a fact-finding mission than a demand for consequences.

An exchange between GOP Rep. Jim Jordan and Walz sparked from conservatives on social media. WALZ ACCUSED BY JORDAN OF TRYING TO ‘HIDE BEHIND’ COURT ORDER IN FEEDING OUR FUTURE PAYMENTS

Jordan confronted Walz over public statements about a judge’s role in restarting reimbursements, pressing the governor on whether his account matched the court record. He pointed to a 2022 court-authorized news release that disputed the governor’s version of events and asked Walz to choose between his statement and the court’s. “So either you’re lying or the court’s lying. And I’m just asking you which one is it?” Jordan demanded.

The hearing also featured a political spotlight moment when another GOP lawmaker, Rep. Nancy Mace, challenged Walz on basic numbers about children in Minnesota and the surge in autism care spending. She pressed him on why those budgetary jumps occurred without clear, current figures being available from his administration. Walz bristled at the line of questioning, saying he would not be “a prop” for Mace, and the back-and-forth grew personal as tensions rose.

Rep. Clay Higgins directed fierce remarks at Ellison, demanding a plain answer about whether the attorney general was leading criminal probes into the fraud. Higgins said, “I’m not talking about Medicaid fraud, don’t hide behind that,” and pressed Ellison to state if he was actively prosecuting the misconduct. When answers failed to satisfy Republicans, he urged that Ellison should step down, saying the AG was not matching the scale of the scandal with an equally forceful response.

Other members pushed the governor on operational details and accountability, highlighting a pattern where public explanations and court documents appeared to clash. Republicans argued this mismatch showed either negligence or deliberate misdirection, and they warned that accountability measures beyond public hearings might be necessary. Several lawmakers invoked state constitutional language as they raised the possibility of impeachment for malfeasance.

Rep. Nick Langworthy wrapped up a tense cadence of questions by suggesting impeachment could be on the table, citing Minnesota’s constitution and the seriousness of the alleged failures. The idea of removing a sitting governor still facing an active scandal signaled how high the stakes have climbed for state leadership. For Republicans in the hearing room, the focus remained on tangible outcomes: full transparency, prosecutions where deserved, and officials answering for how taxpayer money was lost.

The testimony and exchanges left little doubt that the Republican majority on the committee sees this as a turning point. They argued the public deserves clear timelines, hard accountability, and leadership that acts decisively every time fraud is discovered. Lawmakers signaled they will keep pushing until they get the answers and actions Republicans say Minnesotans deserve.
