At a Turning Point USA appearance at the University of Mississippi, Vice President JD Vance argued that Republicans must not shy away from using federal power to protect citizens, saying the left has already weaponized those tools. He answered questions about potential abuse of power, raised concerns about political use of law enforcement, and emphasized accountability for officials who misuse federal authority. Vance highlighted National Guard deployments, the role of the FBI in politics, and the need for penalties when federal power targets Americans.

The event opened with a direct audience question about whether Republicans risk “abusing that power” if they govern aggressively at the federal level. Vance pushed back with a blunt assessment and a historical view. “We cannot be afraid to do something because the left might do it in the future,” Vance said. “The left is already going to do it, regardless of whether we do it. That is the takeaway of the last 40 years.”

He prefaced his answer with a sarcastic hypothetical to make a simple point about political weaponization. “What if Joe Biden sent the Federal Bureau of Investigation to start arresting his political opponents,” Vance asked, pointing to recent prosecutions that many conservatives view as politically motivated. That rhetorical question landed with the crowd and framed his larger argument about defensive action. The implication was that refusing to use power because the left will do so anyway leaves conservatives at a permanent disadvantage.

Vance also touched on troop deployments and public safety. He noted that the prior administration moved the National Guard into cities like Washington, D.C., Los Angeles and Memphis and outlined plans to support immigration enforcement and fight crime across multiple states. For him, the use of military or federal assets should be judged by outcomes, not partisan theater. The basic point: if federal resources stop violence and defend citizens, they have clear purpose.

“If Joe Biden wanted to deploy the National Guard to a red state in a place where the murder rate was twice what it is in third-world countries to actually go after murderers, that would be a great use of the National Guard,” Vance continued. He followed that with skepticism about current priorities. “Unfortunately, I don’t think Joe Biden would use it like that,” the vice president added. “What I’m worried about, frankly, is what the far left already did with American law enforcement — and that is the thing we have to prevent against.”

Accountability was the spine of his answer on misuse of authority. Vance argued that the solution to weaponized federal power is not timidity but consequences for those who crossed the line. “And the answer to that question is, you make sure the people who did it face penalties for using the federal power against American citizens,” he said. “And by the way, that’s exactly what we’re trying to do.”

That stance reflects a Republican approach focused on restoring trust in institutions through direct oversight and legal consequences. Vance suggested reforms and prosecutions where necessary to deter future abuse and to demonstrate that federal power must serve the public interest. He framed the effort as enforcement of rules, not revenge, insisting that accountability preserves liberty and deters political policing.

The broader message to conservative activists was clear and unapologetic: play offense when politics and public safety demand it, and hold violators accountable when federal authority is misused. Vance’s remarks are meant to reassure supporters who fear both overreach from the left and a timid response from their own side. He called for pragmatic use of tools that protect Americans while simultaneously building mechanisms to punish abuse and restore balance.
