A Monday news conference for Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed took an unexpected turn online after a woman speaking on his behalf visibly struggled through her remarks, drawing swift and often harsh reactions across social media.
The woman, identified by El-Sayed’s staff as a UAW member working at a truck factory, paused repeatedly during her speech, breathed heavily, and appeared uneasy throughout. El-Sayed and Democratic state Sen. Mallory McMorrow, who ran against him in the Democratic primary before endorsing his campaign, both stepped in to comfort her as she pushed through the remarks.
The clip quickly spread online, with conservative commentators speculating about whether the woman had been pressured into appearing. “Are they holding a gun to her back?” one organization representing Democrats backing GOP nominee Mike Rogers posted in response. Conservative commentator Link Lauren wrote, “She seems to be under duress! Looks like she’s being coerced into speaking. Very eerie!” Another X user asked, “Is it just me or does she look hostage-level nervous?”
Daily Signal senior correspondent Tony Kinnett wrote, “Haven’t seen someone set themselves on fire for no reason like this since Aaron Bushnell.”
Others tied the moment to broader criticism of El-Sayed’s standing with Black voters after his Democratic primary run. Radio host and conservative columnist Derek Hunter wrote, “Abdul’s support from black Michiganders summed up perfectly in 40 seconds.” Trump administration official Richard Grenell added, “The El Sayed campaign is in free fall.”
McMorrow Pushes Back
McMorrow, who once competed against El-Sayed for the nomination, defended the woman directly on X.
“She had never spoken at a press conference before. Beforehand, she shared with me that she was really nervous. But she told me it was important for her to be there as a UAW member because she believed in using her voice for her fellow members and for working families,” McMorrow wrote. “But the way you all are tearing her apart … It’s callous, cruel and it’s no wonder why so many people absolutely despise this moment that we’re in.”
Left-of-center journalist Zaid Jilani also pushed back on the pile-on, writing that “conservatives lose a lot of support by being needlessly cruel.”
The El-Sayed campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital on Tuesday.
