How incompetent must the leadership of a national political party be to schedule its nominating committee after the deadlines of two states for confirming the party’s nominee to be placed on the ballot? It seems that the Democratic National Committee is about to find out.
Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen recently notified both the Alabama Democratic Party and the DNC that, according to state law, they must confirm their presidential and vice-presidential candidates by August 15 in order to be listed on the state’s ballots in November.
However, there’s a slight issue – the Democratic National Convention isn’t set to start until August 19.
Oops.
It is widely known that President Joe Biden will be the Democratic nominee for this year’s election, despite unfounded conspiracy theories suggesting otherwise.
The confirmation of these nominees by the DNC to the state is a separate matter.
The Western Journal reported that Biden is facing a similar issue in Ohio. The Republican National Convention is scheduled for July 15-18 in Milwaukee, well ahead of the deadlines in Alabama and Ohio.
Both Alabama and Ohio are not expected to be competitive states in the election, representing a total of 26 electoral votes that Biden may not have a strong chance at winning.
In the last two presidential elections, Former President Donald Trump secured victory in Ohio by over 8 points each time and dominated his Democratic rivals in Alabama with margins exceeding 25 points in both 2016 and 2020.
Despite these clear trends, Team Biden is facing challenges.
The Democrats’ approach to this issue has been straightforward: Instead of addressing the failures of their planning team, they are choosing to ignore the problem altogether.
“We’re monitoring the situation in Ohio and we’re confident that Joe Biden will be on the ballot in all 50 states,” a Biden campaign spokesperson told ABC News last week.
After the news about Alabama broke, a Biden campaign spokesperson — perhaps the same one — made a similar statement to Fox News, but actually amped up the denial.
“Joe Biden will be on the ballot in all 50 states,” the unnamed spokesperson said. “State officials have the ability to grant provisional ballot access certification prior to the conclusion of presidential nominating conventions.”
Some state officials in Alabama may not have that ability, unlike officials in other states.
“Under Alabama law, there are no ‘provisional certifications’ for candidates,” the Alabama secretary of state’s office told CNN. “All candidates must comply with current Alabama law to gain ballot access.”
