Graduate teaching assistant arrested after overturning Turning Point USA table on campus

An Illinois State University graduate student and teaching assistant was arrested after overturning a table set up by a conservative student organization in a busy campus area. The incident drew quick attention because video of the act spread widely online. Campus witnesses said the table belonged to Turning Point USA.

Derek Lopez, 27, appears on the recordings grabbing and tipping the display that had been promoting an upcoming campus visit by commentator and comedian Alex Stein. The footage shows the table flipping and several flyers scattering across the pavement. Onlookers filmed and posted clips that circulated across social platforms.

Campus police responded and later arrested Lopez in connection with what authorities classified as a disruption. Officers said the action included the removal of multiple promotional materials for the event and was captured on camera. The swift posting of video kept the episode in local and national view.

Video also records Lopez speaking directly to a member of the student group before he pushes the table over. He can be heard saying, “Well, you know, Jesus did it, so you know I’ve got to do it, right?” which school officials and viewers have cited in statements online. The interaction set off a fast debate about intent and provocation.

University administrators have not yet released a formal statement explaining steps they will take or whether disciplinary procedures will begin. That silence frustrates students and alumni who expect clear, immediate action when a campus disruption targets a political organization. Conservative groups and free speech advocates argue that hesitation looks like tacit approval.

From a Republican standpoint this is a textbook example of why campuses need to enforce order and protect expression for all ideologies. Physical interference with lawful events cannot be treated as a harmless protest or a viral stunt. When a teaching assistant is involved, the stakes are higher because instructors represent the institution and its standards.

Lopez’s role as both a graduate student and a classroom assistant raises questions about employment consequences separate from criminal charges. Observers say the university must balance due process with clear accountability, including reviewing whether a person entrusted with teaching duties can remain in that role. Conservatively minded students said they want to see firm disciplinary steps to deter similar behavior.

College campuses have become battlegrounds for competing speech, and episodes like this test whether administrators will protect minority viewpoints. Turning Point USA and other conservative groups report frequent disruptions at college events, which chills speech and discourages outside speakers. Advocates on the right say consistent enforcement of campus policies is the only way to keep discourse civil and safe.

Police involvement in the case signals that the conduct crossed a legal line beyond mere disagreement or protest. Prosecutors and campus judicial systems may each have a role to play, and campus leaders must be transparent about processes and outcomes. Students deserve to know that their right to assemble and promote ideas will not be undone by intimidation.

Video evidence will likely inform both criminal proceedings and any internal university review, and social platforms will keep the episode in public view for days. This is an opportunity for the institution to show it treats all groups fairly and keeps public spaces open to peaceful advocacy. Failure to act decisively risks normalizing physical interference as a tactic.

Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk was murdered on a college campus in Utah last month.
