Trump Warns New York Could Elect a “Communist” Mayor

President Donald Trump warned that New York City appears headed toward electing what he called a “communist” mayor, a warning rooted in his broader critique of progressive leadership. His comments came during a White House gaggle as the mayoral contest tightens with just weeks to go. The concern he voiced was as much about political direction as it was about city governance.

Asked whether he would tell Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa to step aside, Trump declined to formally endorse anyone while making his unease clear about current polling. He framed the situation as one where splitting votes could hand the city to a far-left candidate. The stakes, he implied, extend beyond local politics to national attention.

“Well, I looked at the polls and looks like we’re going to have a communist as the mayor of New York,” Trump said. “It’ll be very interesting. But here’s the good news. He’s got to go through the White House, everything goes through the White House. At least this White House, it does.”

Trump also floated the idea that if Sliwa left the race, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo might gain ground against Democratic socialist nominee Zohran Mamdani, though he stopped short of predicting a reversal. “If he [Sliwa] dropped out, he’s not going to win. And not looking too good for Cuomo either,” Trump said. “Maybe if he dropped out, Cuomo would have a little bit of a chance. But not much. Because it looks like the lead is—it’s not a great lead, but it’s big enough that he should be able to win.”

On the question of reaching across the aisle, Trump said he would speak with Mamdani were he to win, framing it as a responsibility of office rather than an endorsement. “Yeah, I’ll speak to him,” the president said. “I think I have an obligation to speak to him.” That stance underscores how national leaders sometimes prepare to engage with political opponents for the sake of governance.

Trump used the conversation to lament what he sees as a long decline in New York under progressive mayors and policies. “I love New York. I’ve always loved New York. I just can’t believe a thing like this is happening,” he said. “I left New York, and we had a mayor, [Bill] de Blasio, who was a disaster… New York was a hot city. And now it’s — it’s sad to see what’s happening, frankly.”

He widened the critique to ideological history, warning that a communist model has failed repeatedly. “With the communist in charge… look, you just go back a thousand years. I mean, it’s been done many times, a thousand years. It’s never worked once. So it’s not going to work now.” That warning was meant to resonate with voters wary of radical shifts in policy and city management.

Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic Socialist state assemblyman, has promoted policies that include legalizing prostitution and raising taxes on high earners. His platform has attracted prominent progressive endorsements, signaling national interest in the local race. Those policy positions are central to both his appeal among left-leaning voters and the concern voiced by critics.

The mayoral contest will conclude on Nov. 4, and the outcome promises to shape New York’s immediate future. Campaigns from Cuomo, Mamdani and Sliwa had not issued public responses at the time of these remarks. Voters will decide whether to stick with more traditional options or pivot toward a more radical local agenda.

The discussion around this race reflects broader national debates about urban policy, public safety, and economic priorities. For many Republicans, the New York contest is a cautionary tale about what can happen when centrist alternatives fragment. In any event, the city will face a pivotal choice at the ballot box that will reverberate beyond its borders.
