President Donald Trump doubled down on his criticism of Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie while publicly backing former Navy SEAL Ed Gallrein for the GOP primary, framing the race as a fight over party loyalty, foreign policy, and who can win in November. Massie pushed back, arguing he resists endless wars and foreign aid, and he used the moment to ask supporters for help as his primary approaches. The clash centers on a recent operation in Venezuela, with Trump praising the action and Massie warning it’s about regime change, not drugs. This piece lays out the back-and-forth and the stakes for Kentucky voters.

Trump opened fire on Massie on Truth Social, calling him “the Worst ‘Republican’ Congressman we have had in many years,” and announced that Ed Gallrein has filed to run for the seat. The president made it clear he wants MAGA voters to coalesce behind Gallrein rather than let a dissenter hold the line in what he sees as a crucial seat. The message is blunt and aimed at shoring up a unified Republican front ahead of the primary.

Trump then urged supporters to back Gallrein with a direct appeal that spelled out his reasons and his enthusiasm for the candidate. “I have heard that there are other Candidates exploring a run for this seat, but I am asking all MAGA Warriors to rally behind Captain Ed Gallrein, the Candidate who is, far and away, best positioned to DEFEAT Third Rate Congressman Thomas Massie, a Weak and Pathetic RINO from the beautiful Commonwealth of Kentucky, a place I love, and won BIG, ALL THREE TIMES,” the president asserted. The tone left no room for ambivalence from the party base.

Gallrein’s background as a former Navy SEAL was highlighted as a selling point, and Trump noted the candidate’s support for recent moves against the Venezuelan regime. Trump wrote that Gallrein “is a big fan of our recent attack on Nicolas Maduro, the Dictator of Venezuela.” That line underlines how foreign policy, especially tough stances abroad, is a litmus test for Trump-aligned primary voters who prioritize strength and decisive action.

Massie has positioned himself as a contrarian within the GOP, objecting to what he sees as unnecessary foreign adventures and unchecked spending. He summed up his warning about the Venezuela operation bluntly: “Wake up MAGA. VENEZUELA is not about drugs; it’s about OIL and REGIME CHANGE. This is not what we voted for,” and made clear he believes the public was not sold on this shift in priorities. That stance has endeared him to fiscal hawks and non-interventionists but put him at odds with the Trump-aligned wing of the party.

Trump didn’t hold back on policy or personal criticism, arguing Massie “only votes AGAINST the Republican Party, making life very easy for the Radical Left,” and further charged, “Unlike ‘lightweight’ Congressman Massie, a true hater of Israel, and a totally ineffective LOSER who has failed us so badly, CAPTAIN ED GALLREIN IS A WINNER WHO WILL NOT LET KENTUCKY DOWN!” The rhetoric is intended to draw a sharp contrast between a vote-for-me-or-you-help-the-left narrative and a promise of victory with Gallrein. It’s a straightforward playbook: brand the incumbent as a liability and sell a veteran as the fix.

Massie answered by turning the attacks into a fundraising push, pointing to his independence as the reason he faces repeated criticism from party leaders and their allies. “It happened again today! Why do I get attacked weekly? Because I’m the only Republican who refuses to rubber stamp foreign aid, endless deficits, and unnecessary wars. I’m also exposing sex traffickers. My primary is in May. Please help if you can,” he wrote in a on X. His pitch rests on principled resistance to party orthodoxy and an appeal to voters who want someone willing to push back against the entrenched consensus.
