President Donald Trump sharply attacked one of the mayoral contenders in New York City, calling any Jewish voter who supports Zohran Mamdani “stupid” and urging backing for a different candidate instead. The exchange highlights deep anxiety over antisemitism claims surrounding Mamdani, disagreements about rhetoric like “globalize the intifada,” and watchdog warnings about his statements. The race has turned into a clash over how to balance free speech, public safety, and loyalty to Israel, with Republican voices making a blunt case against Mamdani while pressing voters toward a more moderate alternative.

Trump’s social media post did not mince words and landed hard in an already tense campaign. He wrote, “Any Jewish person that votes for Zohran Mamdani, a proven and self professed JEW HATER, is a stupid person!!!” That line has become a flashpoint, prompting defenders and critics to argue over whether the president’s bluntness helps or hurts debate about legitimate security concerns.

Republicans reading the posts see a clear signal: when language veers toward condoning violence, voters should react strongly. The criticism taps into a broader unease about candidates who flirt with radical slogans or who fail to repudiate violent rhetoric outright. For many conservative voters, the standard is simple — public safety and unwavering opposition to violence against Jews must come first.

Mamdani has pushed back against the most serious labels and insisted he is not antisemitic, and his online profile identifies him as a Democratic Socialist. Earlier this year, Mamdani that “it pains” him “to be called an antisemite.” Those protestations matter, but they have not fully quieted critics who say words and associations still count for a lot when a city’s Jewish communities feel threatened.

Last month Mamdani offered a public pledge on social media about protecting all faiths, a line he repeated to reassure voters. In last month on X, Mamdani declared, “As Mayor, I will do everything in my power to protect Jewish New Yorkers, as I will every faith community.” That statement is one thing; critics argue that a record of ambiguous remarks and controversial associations undercuts such promises.

An antisemitism watchdog produced a harsh assessment this week, flagging repeated refusals to reject violent slogans and worrying language about Israel. The report warned that Mamdani “has repeatedly declined to condemn the slogan ‘globalize the intifada,’ ignoring the fact that the word ‘intifada’ is synonymous with terror attacks, suicide bombings, and incitement to kill Jews.” Those are not abstract academic concerns; for many voters they are red flags about judgment and priorities.

The watchdog also accused Mamdani of downplaying the October 7 massacre and of calling Israel’s countermeasures “genocide,” along with proposing legislation aimed at charities connected to Israel. Critics say that language and policy proposals show poor judgment at a time when city leaders should be focused on protecting neighborhoods and supporting allied communities. In a city that hosts huge Jewish and immigrant populations, those criticisms hit hard with conservative voters who prioritize law, order, and clear public condemnation of terror.

Trump did more than criticize Mamdani directly; he urged support for another candidate and took a swipe at the Republican hopeful. He posted, “A vote for Curtis Sliwa (who looks much better without the beret!) is a vote for Mamdani,” and added, “Whether you personally like Andrew Cuomo or not, you really have no choice. You must vote for him, and hope he does a fantastic job. He is capable of it, Mamdani is not!” For Republicans, that blunt calculus reflects a willingness to back a pragmatic choice over an ideologically risky alternative when the stakes feel this high.
