Senator Lindsey Graham urged a decisive, limited U.S. response to recent Iranian attacks on regional infrastructure and shipping, backing President Trump’s call for a tougher posture and even international partners to join. Trump’s Truth Social post flagged Iranian strikes on ships and touted successes against small boats, while U.S. Central Command reported helicopter action against Iranian small craft. Iran’s foreign minister warned against a military solution, and domestic concerns like rising gas prices are being used to justify a harder line. The debate now mixes military action, alliance politics and campaign-season positioning.

Graham said the recent pattern of Iranian aggression — strikes on the UAE and harassment of commercial shipping — warrants a sharp, confined strike to degrade Tehran’s capabilities. He tied that need to restoring U.S. credibility with allies and to pressuring Iran’s leadership. In his view, a big, strong and short response would be both measured and meaningful.

Sharing a screenshot of the president’s message, Graham made his support clear and public. “Iran has taken some shots at unrelated Nations with respect to the Ship Movement, PROJECT FREEDOM, including a South Korean Cargo Ship. Perhaps it’s time for South Korea to come and join the mission! We’ve shot down seven small Boats or, as they like to call them, ‘fast’ Boats. It’s all they have left. Other than the South Korean Ship, there has been, at this moment, no damage going through the Strait.”

“Spot on, Mr. President. The combination of Iran’s attack against UAE’s vital infrastructure and continued attacks on international shipping, including a South Korean cargo ship, more than justifies a big, strong and short response to inflict further damage on Iran’s war machine,” Graham posted, signaling alignment with the administration’s tougher rhetoric. He argued that demonstrating force can prevent future aggression by showing consequences. The tone is unapologetically assertive, focused on deterrence.

TRUMP OPENS HORMUZ UNDER FIRE WITH ‘PROJECT FREEDOM’ AS IRAN WARNS OF ATTACKS This framing makes the case for a coalition posture around freedom of navigation and allied protection. Republicans see Project Freedom as a way to push back without committing to indefinite ground wars. The goal is to impose meaningful costs on Iran’s operational capacity.

Graham doubled down on the idea that our Gulf partners deserve U.S. backing and that Tehran’s recent behavior shows diplomatic dead ends. “The UAE has been a champion ally in this fight, doing everything that’s being asked of them and beyond. Iran’s recent brazen attack against the UAE tells me a lot about who’s in charge in Iran and the chance of a diplomatic solution any time soon. A forceful response on behalf of our ally, UAE, will reinforce that America is back as a reliable ally, helping to further wash away the damage caused by the Biden administration on this front,” he stated, making alliance politics central to his argument.

U.S. military officials are already taking tactical steps. Helicopters were utilized “just this morning to eliminate six Iranian small boats,” U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) Commander Adm. Brad Cooper noted on Monday. That kind of limited engagement fits the “strong and short” approach Graham advocates, aiming to neutralize immediate threats without escalating into full-scale conflict. Military leaders are presenting precise action as preferable to open-ended commitments.

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi declared in a on X, “Events in Hormuz make clear that there’s no military solution to a political crisis. As talks are making progress with Pakistan’s gracious effort, the U.S. should be wary of being dragged back into quagmire by ill-wishers. So should the UAE. Project Freedom is Project Deadlock.” His warning frames any U.S. move as risky and potentially counterproductive, which keeps diplomatic channels and regional mediators engaged in the public argument.

The domestic angle is immediate and tangible: the AAA national average price for regular gas has surged to $4.483 as of Tuesday. That spike feeds public anxiety about energy costs and national security, and it makes the political calculus sharper for senators and representatives. Republicans are connecting foreign threats and energy policy to argue for stronger deterrence abroad to protect American pocketbooks at home.

“To the American people: I know gas prices are high, and I know we’re suffering right now. But you pay now, or you pay later against thugs like Iran. They tried to get a nuclear weapon, and if you don’t believe that you shouldn’t be allowed to drive in your hometown,” Graham said during a Monday night appearance on Fox News Channel’s “Hannity.” He used blunt language to justify immediate pressure on Iran and to frame inaction as a longer-term cost. That direct pitch ties national security decisions to everyday economic pain.

Graham is pursuing re-election this year, and national security stances are central to his campaign message. President Trump endorsed the senator for re-election last year, reinforcing Graham’s alignment with the current conservative foreign policy approach. Expect this thread — alliances, measured military action, and political accountability — to play strongly through the summer as events in the Gulf and campaign season unfold.
