President Donald Trump announced the White House Correspondents’ Dinner will be rescheduled for July at the Waldorf Astoria, turning a chaotic April night into a statement of resolve. The move, framed as a stand against violence, comes after an armed suspect disrupted the banquet and sent the president and first lady to safety. Organizers say the event will be smaller, tighter on security, and a chance to prove that attacks will not dictate public life.

Trump used Truth Social to frame the rescheduling as both practical and symbolic, writing, “In a sign of Strength and Fortitude, it was just announced that The White House Correspondents’ Dinner, which violently ended rather abruptly on April 25th, will be rescheduled to July 24th. This announcement is a very good thing in that we cannot allow Lunatics to change our way of life, or even its scheduling.” His voice pushes the idea that Americans should refuse to be cowed by violence, and he cast the reschedule as a reclaiming of normal life.

He added a touch of personal flair about the venue, writing, “It will be a ‘HOT’ ticket! Interestingly, the location will be The Waldorf Astoria, on Pennsylvania Avenue, a Building and Ballroom that I built,” which underscores his private-sector ties to the site. For many supporters this reads as a confident choice, putting the affair somewhere familiar and secure. The remark also signals that the administration expects interest to spike once the date is firm.

The annual dinner had been at the Washington Hilton for years until this spring’s violent interruption, when an armed suspect allegedly tried to kill the president. Secret Service agents moved the president and first lady out of harm’s way as guests dove for cover, and the night ended in chaos. That scene shifted the usual humor and politics of the dinner into a national security conversation almost instantly.

TRUMP RUSHED AWAY FROM WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENTS’ DINNER AS SHOTS FIRED

Trump confirmed he was asked to attend by the association and accepted, writing, “I was asked to be there, and speak, by Weijia Jiang, President of The White House Correspondents’ Association, and have accepted. I don’t know whether or not I will give the same rather nasty statements, at least as it concerns certain people, but we will soon find out.” That tone mixes defiance with a wink, and it tells supporters he is willing to show up and speak his mind. It also sets expectations that the president will not be silenced or softened by threats.

The Waldorf Astoria sits inside the Old Post Office building, which previously housed Trump International Hotel Washington D.C. The Trump Organization sold the lease rights in 2022, but the connection is still part of the venue’s narrative. Choosing that ballroom instead of returning to the Hilton feels deliberate and signals a fresh start for the event.

LEAVITT BLAMES ‘LEFT-WING CULT OF HATRED’ AFTER WHCA DINNER SHOOTING

Weijia Jiang and the White House Correspondents’ Association moved quickly to reschedule and to define the gathering as more intimate, saying the board chose a date that would allow tighter controls. “The event will feature significantly enhanced safety measures and new access procedures,” Jiang stated. That language points to stepped-up screening and logistics meant to prevent a repeat of April’s panic.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, who has been on maternity leave, that she will attend the event, writing, “Looking forward to a great night.” Her attendance signals both support for the president and a return to routine duties, and it reassures those who want the administration visible at civic events. The message is short, upbeat, and typical of a team trying to project calm after a scare.

MELANIA TRUMP ADVISOR REVEALS WHAT FIRST LADY WAS THINKING AS SECRET SERVICE RUSHED WHCA DINNER

Jiang framed the evening as more than a program, saying, “This dinner will not only be an opportunity to carry out our program. It will be a statement that violence has no place in American life and a free press will not be intimidated into silence. As you have all demonstrated, courage and community can and should rise above,” Jiang said. Those words put the spotlight on values, not just logistics, and they push back against the idea that a violent act should rewrite public calendars.

Legal proceedings continue against the suspect, who in May entered a plea of not guilty to multiple charges, including attempted assassination and related firearm offenses. The case has added a layer of courtroom attention to the public debate over safety and political violence. Organizers and the Secret Service will now have to balance openness for the press with heightened protections for attendees.
