President Trump unveiled the Freedom Haulers Initiative to fast-track veterans into commercial trucking, remove unlawful drivers from our highways, and boost safety and jobs for Americans, framing the move as commonsense policy that rewards service and protects communities.
The White House rolled out a plan to make it faster for veterans with military heavy-vehicle experience to get commercial driver’s licenses without repeating training they already earned in uniform. The administration framed this as a twofer: move illegal drivers off the road and fill high-paying jobs with Americans who know discipline and responsibility. That pitch plays well with voters who want secure borders and good careers for veterans.
The initiative lets qualifying veterans apply to waive the CDL road-skills test and, in some states, even the written knowledge exam, acknowledging the real-world training troops receive. For those without prior military truck-driving experience, the program promises expedited training that can be finished in a matter of weeks. The goal is simple and direct: speed honest, capable applicants into jobs that are desperately needed across the economy.
Trump made the messaging blunt and clear: “Today, we’re taking action to get illegal alien truck drivers off the American roadways and replace them with proud American veterans,” Trump said. “It’s about time.” That language connects two priorities: border enforcement and veteran opportunity, a natural rallying point for conservatives who want results, not paperwork.
The administration says 34 states have signed on or are actively implementing the Even Exchange Program, with Indiana, Wyoming, Louisiana, Arkansas, Alabama, Florida and Maryland among those participating. Officials are pressing the holdouts to join so the program can scale quickly and deliver real hiring outcomes. Employers and state agencies are the pieces that must move in sync for this to become more than a slogan.
Officials also highlighted enforcement actions aimed at commercial drivers who allegedly flout federal English-language rules or who received licenses while in the country illegally. The administration reports more than 24,000 non-English-speaking commercial drivers removed from the road and over 28,000 CDL cancellations tied to unlawful issuance. Those figures are used to justify the tighter approach and to argue that ramping up veteran hiring is both practical and patriotic.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy emphasized the pay and patriotism tied to the jobs: “These are great-paying jobs. They’re anywhere from $80,000 to $100,000-plus a year,” Duffy said. “…illegals are out. American patriots are in.” That line drives home the contrast the administration wants voters to see: secure jobs for Americans, accountability for those who broke the rules.
The Department of Veterans Affairs will expand access to CDL training, letting eligible veterans use GI Bill benefits and speeding up enrollment in training programs. “Let’s put veterans in the seats, making jobs safer and better for all Americans,” Collins said, noting that roughly one in 10 truck drivers nationwide already are veterans. This is presented as a smart use of existing benefits to meet private sector demand.
Private industry is already pledging hires; Werner Enterprises announced plans to recruit 1,400 veterans over the next year as part of the campaign, calling service members a natural fit for long-haul work. Army veteran Ricky Washington, who moved into commercial trucking after three decades with the Army and Army National Guard, framed the job as continued service. “The trucking industry is more than just a sector of our economy — it’s the backbone of our commerce,” Washington said. “It is a place where service members, veterans [and] military spouses can find a purpose, a community and a way to continue keeping our great nation moving forward.”
