President Trump’s endorsement of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has cracked open a bruising GOP Senate runoff, setting up a clear MAGA-versus-establishment fight with Senator John Cornyn ahead of the May 26 vote. The race now centers on loyalty to Trump, competing campaign war chests, and a Democratic opponent who offers a real general election test for the party in Texas.

Trump formally backed Paxton one week before the runoff, throwing his weight behind a staunch ally. “Ken is a true MAGA Warrior who has ALWAYS delivered for Texas, and will continue to do so in the United States Senate,” the president wrote in a social media post, making the endorsement impossible to ignore.

The March primary left Cornyn and Paxton without a majority, so the nomination moved to a runoff on May 26. That overtime contest has become a proxy battle for the soul of the GOP in a state Republicans need to hold.

The president had stayed neutral for months, waiting as early voting began, then stepped in. “There are those that say whoever I endorse is going to win,” Trump said. “I don’t know if that’s true, but historically, that’s absolutely true. I just don’t like to say it because I don’t like to brag.”

Paxton publicly vowed to keep fighting even when it looked like Trump might back Cornyn, arguing he represents a different path for Texas Republicans. “I’ve spent a year of my life campaigning against John Cornyn because John has not represented the people of Texas well,” Paxton said, drawing a bright contrast with the incumbent.

The general election matchup will pit whoever wins the GOP runoff against state Representative James Talarico, a Democrat aiming to flip a long-red seat. Republicans see Talarico as beatable but believe the wrong GOP nominee could hand Democrats an opening they can’t ignore.

Paxton has dangled a policy bargain tied to the filibuster and the Save America Act, pressing national priorities alongside his campaign. “The Save America Act is the most important bill the U.S. Senate could ever pass, and I’m committed to helping President Trump get it done,” he wrote, making passage of the bill a political litmus test.

He framed his fight as loyalty to the movement and an attack on Cornyn’s record, arguing the senator resisted bold reforms. “For the good of our country and for the good of passing President Trump’s agenda, I am determined to help him get this done,” Paxton added, and later charged, “John Cornyn is a coward who has refused to support abolishing the filibuster to pass this bill.”

Cornyn and allied groups countered with a massive ad campaign and a message focused on electability and Paxton’s personal controversies. “Over the next 12 weeks, Texas Republican primary voters will hear more about my record of delivering conservative victories in the United States Senate, and learn more about Ken’s indefensible personal behavior and failures in office,” Cornyn told reporters as he prepared for the runoff.

Senate leaders poured effort into securing Cornyn’s renomination, arguing stability and statewide strength matter for the majority fight. “He’s positioned to win the runoff, and if the president endorses early, it saves everybody a lot of money, and a lot of, you know, just 10 weeks of another spirited campaign on our side that keeps us from spending time focusing on the Democrats,” Senate Majority Leader John Thune said in public remarks backing Cornyn’s path.

Paxton emphasized his track record suing federal administrations and cast the contest as MAGA versus the old guard. “As we head into this runoff, we’re going to make the choice even clearer. While John Cornyn was cutting deals on gun control and amnesty, I was suing corrupt Joe Biden over 107 times,” he told supporters, also pointing to the spending gap: “John Cornyn spent around $100 million trying to buy this seat. We’ve spent around $5 million.”

With national groups already deployed on both sides, the runoff will be a costly, intense sprint. The party’s leaders and activists will now have to decide whether to rally behind Trump’s pick or double down on the incumbent they believe is most likely to hold the seat in November.

Trump has repeatedly pushed Republicans to focus on beating Talarico and protecting the Senate majority as the campaign moves into its final stretch. “for the good of the Party, and our Country, itself, be allowed to go on any longer. IT MUST STOP NOW!” he urged, adding urgency as the two camps head into a high-stakes finish.
