President Donald Trump has slammed media coverage in Minnesota, arguing outlets obsess over Immigration and Customs Enforcement while overlooking what he calls massive corruption and taxpayer theft in the state. He repeated the charge on Truth Social and pointed to federal probes that allege billions lost to fraud across several programs. The dispute has triggered political fallout, investigations and heated public protests around federal enforcement actions.

Trump took to Truth Social to frame the debate as one about misplaced priorities, insisting national attention should shift from who ICE is targeting to how state money was handled. “In Minnesota, there is too much media attention on ICE, who have removed some of the worst murderers and criminals in the World, people let into our Country by Crooked Joe Biden’s horrendous Open Border Policy, and not enough attention paid to the staggering sums of money stolen from the State by corrupt Minnesota politicians,” he wrote. His tone was blunt and pointed, typical of how he highlights border and crime concerns.

The president did not provide precise case names or dollar figures in that post, but his comments land amid a drumbeat of allegations and inquiries about program fraud in Minnesota. Federal prosecutors have alleged the state lost potentially billions across multiple programs, including child care subsidies, food assistance and services for children with autism. Those claims have elevated scrutiny of how funds were awarded and who benefited.

Minnesota’s governor and attorney general have pushed back, disputing the magnitude of the losses and accusing Republicans of political exaggeration. They say the state is reviewing claims and tightening controls where improper claims were made, while Republicans insist the numbers are real and warrant full accountability. This back-and-forth has hardened partisan lines and propelled the issue into national headlines.

The political consequences were swift: the controversy helped drive Governor Tim Walz to abandon a bid for a third term, a decision tied to the pressure around spending and ethics questions. At the same time, Congress has opened an inquiry through the House Oversight Committee, with Chairman James Comer signaling the probe could be a template for similar examinations elsewhere. Investigators are trying to untangle program design, oversight failures and any unlawful enrichment.

Trump doubled down, accusing Minnesota Democrats of trying to redirect attention away from the fraud allegations by amplifying outrage over ICE operations. “ICE is removing some of the most violent criminals in the World from our Country, and bring them back home, where they belong. Why is Minnesota fighting this? Do they really want murderers and drug dealers to be ensconced in their community? The thugs that are protesting include many highly paid professional agitators and anarchists. Is this really what Minnesota wants?” he wrote, framing federal removals as public safety actions under attack.

He named political figures he sees as complicit in the distraction, singling out both the governor and Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar as part of the deflection. “They don’t mind because it keeps the focus of attention off the 18 Billion Dollar, Plus, FRAUD, that has taken place in the State!” Trump wrote, then added, “Don’t worry, we’re on it!” The rhetoric underlines a Republican demand for aggressive investigation and for federal oversight where state systems appear to have failed.

Federal agents operating in Minneapolis and St. Paul have faced protests and harassment from demonstrators in recent weeks, complicating enforcement work and adding a charged public-safety angle to the political argument. Prosecutors have said they are also examining whether state and local officials impeded federal law enforcement efforts, looking at actions by the governor and city leaders. Those probes will test legal lines about cooperation and the scope of federal authority.

The fight over headlines, law enforcement and alleged fraud is now a full-blown political and legal contest in Minnesota, with national implications. Republicans pushing the fraud narrative are demanding answers and tighter accountability, while state Democrats insist the picture is more complex and condemn what they call politicized attacks. The coming months are likely to bring more evidence, more filings and an intense battle over who gets to set the story.
