A printing mistake in Maryland forced the state to reissue hundreds of thousands of mail-in ballots and sparked a fierce Republican backlash, with former President Trump calling for a Department of Justice probe, the RNC demanding answers, and voting officials promising replacement ballots and safeguards. The vendor responsible apologized and said corrected ballots will be mailed by May 29, 2026, while state election administrators pushed back on claims that illegal ballots were intentionally distributed. Tensions over voter rolls and election security have flared as the June 23 primary approaches and campaigns scramble to protect their voters.

President Trump blasted the mix-up as evidence of partisan mismanagement and urged federal action. “In Maryland, they sent out 500,000 Illegal Mail In Ballots, and they got caught!” he posted, and he followed up by arguing the initial mailing unfairly favored Democrats. “So now, they’re going to send out 500,000 more Mail In Ballots, but nobody knows what’s happening with the first 500,000 they sent. In addition, many of these Ballots went to Democrats, so any Republican running in Maryland doesn’t have a chance!”

Trump also leveled a direct charge at Governor Wes Moore, tying the error to political intent and calling for accountability. “This was done by the Corrupt Governor of the State, Wes Moore,” Trump’s post continued. “He allowed this to happen in order to make sure that Democrats win. It never made sense to me that Maryland was considered an automatic Democrat State, but now I see why. I’m sure this has gone on for years.”

Trump asked for a DOJ inquiry and specifically named the acting attorney general in his demand. “I’m going to ask the Attorney General of the United States, and the DOJ, to bring an immediate investigation into this situation,” his Monday afternoon post concluded. That call reflects a broader Republican push for federal oversight when state errors touch large swaths of voters.

State election officials disputed the use of the word “illegal” and framed the incident as a vendor error affecting ballots mailed before May 14. State administrators noted that more than 500,000 voters had requested mail-in ballots, and they moved to send corrected ballots to those affected. One administrator explained the goal plainly: “Mail-in voting is an integral facet of the electoral process.”

To restore confidence, officials said replacement ballots were being prepared and mailed, and the printer responsible apologized for the mistake. “With over 500,000 voters requesting mail-in ballots, we want to eliminate any doubt in its integrity or accuracy; that is why I have arranged the sending of replacement ballots,” the administrator added. Voters were urged to watch for the new mailing and follow instructions to ensure only corrected ballots are used.

The vendor, Taylor Print & Visual Impressions, acknowledged the problem and promised corrected shipments. “A portion of voters received ballot packets intended for a different voter segment,” the TPVI Election Services Team wrote in a statement. “We understand the seriousness of this matter and the importance of accuracy and trust in all election-related communications.”

TPVI set a firm date for the remail and advised voters on how to proceed with the duplicate materials. Notably, “all ballots will be remailed by 5/29/2026,” TPVI added, and the company instructed recipients to discard the earlier packet. “Voters should securely discard or destroy the original ballot materials they received and use only the replacement ballot sent in the new mailing,” the vendor concluded.

Republicans seized on the error as proof that Maryland needs outside scrutiny of its voter rolls and handling procedures. The RNC and Maryland GOP called for transparency about who received replacement ballots and what safeguards will prevent duplicate voting. “Marylanders deserve answers after this unacceptable failure. The RNC and Maryland GOP are demanding transparency on how it happened, who will receive replacement ballots, and what safeguards will be used to prevent duplicate voting,” RNC Chair Joe Gruters said.

The RNC’s election integrity unit said it would deploy local legal teams and expand Protect the Vote operations across the state. That effort includes voter hotlines, legal oversight, and education efforts aimed at ensuring ballots are cast correctly and counted only once. Republicans see this as a necessary step to protect midterm turnout from primary contests through the November general election.

With the June 23 primary on the calendar, timelines matter and confusion can suppress confidence at the polls. Voters who want mail-in ballots must request one by June 16, and campaigns are warning supporters to watch their mail carefully. Local party leaders are urging anyone who received the wrong packet to follow the replacement instructions and report irregularities so officials can address them quickly.
