President Donald Trump, speaking aboard Air Force One as he headed to South Korea, made it clear that his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping will focus on fentanyl, trade and border security. He expressed confidence that China will cooperate and said the talks will address the flow of deadly drugs and broader economic friction. Trump tied the fentanyl crisis directly to border policy and highlighted the role of U.S. law enforcement in pushing back.

Trump said fentanyl trafficking will be central to the discussion and insisted the issue cannot be separated from border policy. He framed the crisis as a direct consequence of lax controls and described the human toll in blunt terms. From a Republican perspective, the solution starts with strong borders and international pressure on China to stop shipments.

“China is going to be working with me, okay,” Trump told reporters. “They’re going to be working with me, and we’re going to do something, I believe.” Those lines set the tone for a meeting pitched as both serious and solution-oriented, with the president confident about a cooperative result.

On the timing and stakes he said, “We have to have the meeting — a meeting tomorrow. That’s a big meeting,” and made clear fentanyl will be on the agenda. The message is simple: the White House is making fentanyl a diplomatic priority. Bringing the issue into summit-level talks signals a shift to tougher, more direct engagement.

Trump linked the fentanyl epidemic to illegal crossings at the southern border and did not spare criticism for the previous administration’s policies. “We took in tremendous amounts of death. I call them the boats of death,” he said, using stark language to describe the crisis. That rhetoric underscores a Republican argument that porous borders are a national security emergency.

“Under Biden and open borders, stuff was flowing. I think they killed 300,000 people last year — fentanyl drugs coming through the southern border. And now nobody gets through this. We’re very tough on the border.” Those exact words were aimed at pushing a narrative of reversal and accountability. The administration wants voters to see the contrast between past chaos and current enforcement.

Trump also touted operational wins at sea, saying interdiction by water had seen dramatic improvement. He claimed drug trafficking by sea was “down about 80% by water,” a figure he used to argue that focused policy and resources yield measurable results. From a GOP view, enforcement works when given clear direction and support.

He praised U.S. law enforcement agencies by name and tone, calling Border Patrol and ICE “amazing” and stressing their effectiveness under a stricter approach. That kind of public backing serves to bolster morale for agents and reinforce Republican commitments to law and order. It also positions the administration as standing with those frontline officers.

Trade and tariffs were also part of the agenda, with Trump signaling he would press Xi on economic matters alongside fentanyl. Farmers and trade interests were mentioned as stakeholders who expect tangible progress. The message is that diplomacy must produce wins at home as well as on the global stage.

Beyond drugs and trade, Trump touched on broader regional security issues, including recent tensions involving Israel and North Korea. He indicated these topics would factor into the diplomatic calculus but kept the emphasis on concrete action against trafficking. That approach reflects a Republican preference for linking security and economic leverage to achieve policy goals.

Throughout his remarks, Trump projected confidence in getting a productive outcome from the meeting, telling reporters, “I think we’ll get a great meeting with President Xi of China. And a lot of problems are going to be solved.” The administration wants the public to view the summit as a turning point where pressure and negotiation combine to deliver results.

For Republicans, the key takeaway is clear: strong borders, tough enforcement, and targeted diplomacy are the tools to reduce fentanyl deaths and protect American communities. Trump framed the summit as a moment to hold partners accountable while delivering practical relief for families and industries affected by crime and unfair trade. The focus is on outcomes and the promise of immediate, enforceable action.
