Texas Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico is facing a public deadline to account for nearly two weeks off the campaign trail, after independent journalists Nick Sortor and Rhein Amacher gave him until 1 p.m. ET to explain where he was or have their own findings released.
Talarico last campaigned in person on September 26. He then attended a fundraiser in New York and told participants in a September 30 virtual event that he had been diagnosed with the flu after visiting an urgent care clinic in Dallas. After that, his campaign went quiet.
The campaign said he was recovering, but the length of the absence drew attention from Republican Senate nominee Ken Paxton’s campaign, which circulated missing-person-style graphics demanding “proof of life.” Fox 7 Austin reporter Rudy Koski reportedly offered Talarico a chance to appear by Zoom. The campaign turned it down.
Talarico resurfaced Friday at the Austin City Limits music festival, spending roughly 15 minutes greeting attendees and posing for photos. He did not answer reporters’ questions.
Speculation Over a Treatment Facility
Republican strategist Caroline Wren and former Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt have both suggested, without confirmed evidence, that Talarico may have spent the missing time at a mental health treatment facility rather than simply recovering from the flu.
Pratt wrote on X: “My sources are telling me Talarico is in a mental health facility.” He added that campaigns are “brutal,” that “not everybody is cut out for it,” and that if the claim is true, “this is actually a time to pray for Talarico,” while also calling it something that “would be disqualifying for Talarico’s aspirations to be a Texas Senator.”
Wren pointed to private flight-tracking data showing a plane that she said departed Austin for Hamilton, Ohio — about 20 minutes from the Lindner Center of Hope, a private inpatient psychiatric facility — before returning to Austin on Friday morning at 10:24 a.m., hours before Talarico appeared at the music festival. She noted the same facility reportedly treated Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, a Talarico associate, for seven weeks during a 2023 mental health crisis.
“What are the chances that a private plane took off from Austin and flew to tiny Hamilton airport in Ohio… and then turned around and flew back to Austin landing yesterday morning at 10:24am right before James Talarico magically reappears at the Austin City Limits music festival that afternoon?” Wren asked.
The flight data concerns a private aircraft, not a commercial itinerary tied to a passenger manifest. It does not by itself identify who was on board or confirm that Talarico traveled to Ohio.
Trump Weighs In
President Donald Trump mocked the flu explanation Saturday during a rally in Clarksville, Tennessee. “He had the longest flu ever recorded,” Trump said. “He was away for, like, almost 14 days. He was missing in action! I don’t think it was the flu either, that it was a new strain of flu.” He added: “It keeps you out of commission for weeks! This guy Talafreako still wears the mask. And he had the longest flu ever recorded!”
With Sortor and Amacher’s deadline now public, the pressure is on Talarico’s campaign to answer directly rather than let outside claims fill the gap.
