Once again, the Republican Party appears ready to betray its base by caving to Democrats on critical legislation.
This time, it’s the SAVE Act, which would require proof of citizenship for voter registration in federal elections—an issue many Americans see as essential to protecting the integrity of the ballot box.
Former President Donald Trump has been vocal in his support for the SAVE Act, even suggesting that the government should be shut down if the bill is not part of the upcoming Continuing Resolution (CR).
“If Republicans in the House and Senate don’t get absolute assurances on Election Security, THEY SHOULD, IN NO WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM, GO FORWARD WITH A CONTINUING RESOLUTION,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Initially, House Speaker Mike Johnson pulled the bill before a vote, but later allowed it to proceed last Wednesday. The result? Democrats, with the help of 14 Republicans, defeated the measure by a margin of 220-202.
Now, reports indicate that Speaker Johnson is prepared to abandon efforts to address election security in favor of simply funding the government.
According to Punchbowl News’s Jake Sherman, Johnson plans to pass a continuing resolution this week that will fund the government through December 20, just days before Christmas.
In other words, the plan is to keep the government running with record levels of unchecked spending, while getting nothing in return for election security.
Congress is expected to rush through this CR and head home for the holidays, leaving the issue unresolved.
This is despite earlier promises from Republican leaders to avoid short-term funding solutions and engage in serious budget negotiations.
Instead, many see this as just another example of political theater. Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) called out the charade earlier this month, warning that GOP leadership was only interested in putting on a show.
“The worst thing Republicans in the House can do is create a fake fight that the base knows they’re lying about, and frustrate our voters ahead of November fifth,” Greene said. “That’s how you lose the House of Representatives.”
While Trump may be able to clean house in the executive branch if he wins another term, the swamp in Congress is a different story. Only fed-up voters can truly drain that part of the swamp.
As this saga unfolds, remember that your tax dollars are funding these games. Vote accordingly.
