A Florida man defended his home with deadly precision Thursday night, fatally shooting one of two masked intruders who broke into his residence. The incident, which took place in the Lakewood Ranch area of Manatee County, has sparked praise from the community and a strong warning from local law enforcement: breaking into a home in Florida may cost you your life.

According to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, the break-in occurred around 9 p.m. in the 6700 block of Hickory Hammock Circle. The homeowner’s quick thinking and use of surveillance technology may have saved his family’s lives.

Sheriff Rick Wells explained during a Friday morning press conference that the homeowner’s surveillance camera detected movement near the side of the house. Upon seeing two masked individuals on the property, the homeowner immediately acted, instructing his wife to seek safety while he armed himself.

When the intruders broke in, the homeowner confronted them and opened fire. One of the suspects was struck multiple times and was later rushed to Sarasota Memorial Hospital. He succumbed to his injuries Friday morning.

“This is the state of Florida,” Sheriff Wells said emphatically. “If you want to break into someone’s home, you should expect to be shot.”

The second intruder, identified as 39-year-old Michel Soto-Mella, attempted to flee but was apprehended a few blocks away by K9 units. Soto-Mella, a Chilean national, was in the United States illegally, having overstayed his 90-day visa, which expired in September.

While Soto-Mella has been “somewhat cooperative,” Sheriff Wells noted that he has not fully disclosed all details about the incident.

Authorities have not released additional information about the suspect who was fatally shot, but the investigation remains ongoing.

The homeowner’s decisive actions have garnered widespread support from the community, with many applauding his bravery and preparedness.

Social media erupted with praise for the homeowner following the incident. Under WTVT-TV’s Facebook post about the break-in, commenters expressed admiration for the man’s actions.

Sheriff Wells did not mince words during his public statement. His message to potential criminals was clear: Florida homeowners are ready and willing to defend their property and loved ones.

“People in this state will not hesitate to protect themselves,” Wells said. “This homeowner did exactly what he should have done. His actions were courageous, and he safeguarded his family.”

This incident is the latest example of Florida’s “stand your ground” culture, which allows homeowners to use deadly force to protect their homes and families from intruders.

The revelation that one of the suspects was an illegal immigrant has added a layer of controversy to the case. Soto-Mella’s immigration status has drawn criticism from those advocating for stricter border control and visa enforcement.

“This highlights the dangers of a broken immigration system,” one community member stated. “We need to know who is in our country and why.”

Others focused on the personal responsibility of the intruders, with many arguing that criminal behavior has consequences, regardless of one’s background.

The homeowner’s use of surveillance technology and quick action underscores the importance of preparedness in home defense. Law enforcement emphasized that situational awareness and readiness can be critical in such situations.

“This could have ended very differently,” Sheriff Wells noted. “Thankfully, this homeowner was prepared, and his family is safe because of it.”

As the investigation continues, authorities are working to gather more details from the surviving suspect and piece together the events leading up to the break-in. Soto-Mella is expected to face serious charges, and the case may reignite debates about immigration enforcement and home defense laws.

For now, the homeowner’s actions stand as a stark reminder that, in Florida, residents are prepared to defend what’s theirs—with deadly force if necessary.

“This man is a hero,” one social media user concluded. “He protected his home, his family, and his rights. That’s what it means to be an American.”
