While most of the country focuses on the acquittal of Kate Steinle’s killer, another horrifying case took place in Portland. While some say Steinle’s killer made a mistake, Sergio Jose Martinez is a true monster.
Martinez is a Mexican national with a criminal record. He has a criminal record as well as several deportations and re-entries. This week, the court sentenced him to 35 years in prison after pleading guilty to several monstrous crimes. Crimes include assault, burglary, kidnapping, sexual abuse, sodomy, and rape.
While receiving his sentence, Martinez smirked. He showed absolutely no remorse.

A brother of one of the victims said:
Sergio, no sentencing is enough. I rather you rot in hell.
As Martinez left the courtroom, he returned the sentiment to the family.
See all you guys in hell.
On July 24, Martinez assaulted two women in separate incidents. In the first incident, Martinez broke into a 65-year-old woman’s home. He assaulted her, raped her, and then stole her cell phone and car.
The victim gathered enough strength to call the police from her neighbor’s phone. Then, police tracked down the stolen car through the cell phone’s GPS. In the meantime, Martinez assaulted another woman in a parking garage.
Thankfully, the woman caught the attention of passersby. Shortly after, the police apprehended Martinez.
The criminal has been deported from the U.S. no less than 20 times. The last time occurred in November 2016. It’s unclear when he made his way back. Earlier this year, the Multnomah County Sheriffs Office had Martinez in custody. Despite an ICE detainer placed on him, he was able to leave prison due to the state’s sanctuary laws.
How sad it is to realize so much pain could have been prevented. The Multnomah sheriff seemed to sidestep any guilt.
He was released consistent with the orders of the court. No federal or state criminal warrants were present at the time he left our custody…
It would help our community to understand how he was held accountable by federal authorities for multiple, illegal re-entries.
It would also have helped to hold onto Martinez until ICE could pick him up.
