Selena Gomez says she quit vaping nicotine, but the damage to her voice is permanent. The 34-year-old actress and singer shared the warning directly with fans in a video posted to her Instagram Story.

“I’m not going to be able to change my voice,” she said. “I vaped nicotine, a lot.”

Gomez didn’t soften the message. She told fans considering vaping, or those already struggling to quit, that the habit isn’t worth it.

“Everyone knows – that’s somewhat vaped – nicotine is so hard to quit. And I think I just wanted to say, if you’re going through it, or if you are even trying to vape, it’s just not worth it.”

She was blunt about the outcome. “And it’s changed my voice,” Gomez said. “So, if you guys don’t like listening to my voice that’s totally understandable I don’t mind, just don’t listen to it. Just don’t listen.”

Despite the permanent change, Gomez said she’s focused on having finally broken the habit, and she offered encouragement to anyone else trying to do the same.

“But I am really excited because I stopped, and I just hope we can keep it up. It’s really hard, but I know if you are going through something you can get through it too. It sucks.”

Gomez has a long history of speaking candidly about her health. In 2014 she entered a mental health facility shortly after being diagnosed with lupus, and she later revealed a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. She underwent a kidney transplant and chemotherapy as part of her treatment.

“My lupus, my kidney transplant, chemotherapy, having a mental illness, going through very public heartbreaks – these were all things that honestly should have taken me down,” she told Elle magazine in 2021. “Every time I went through something, I was like, ‘What else? What else am I going to have to deal with?'”

Gomez chronicled six years of her life and health struggles in the 2022 documentary “My Mind & Me.” She also built mental health advocacy into her business, launching the Rare Beauty cosmetics line in 2020 along with the Rare Impact Fund, which raises money for mental health services.
