Speaker Mike Johnson finds himself at the center of a political storm, as a social media poll conducted by Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) reveals overwhelming dissatisfaction with his leadership. The poll, posted on X (formerly Twitter), asked users whether Johnson should be reelected as Speaker of the House on January 3, 2025. The results were staggering: over 93% of respondents demanded new leadership, voting for “someone else” to take the gavel.

The poll results reflect a deeper fracture within the Republican Party, following Johnson’s controversial handling of a government funding bill last week. His decision to strike a backroom deal with Democrats, bypassing a Trump-supported funding strategy, has drawn sharp criticism from GOP lawmakers and voters alike.

Late Friday, Johnson abandoned a Republican-led plan involving three separate funding bills in favor of an “all-in-one” measure, which passed with significant Democrat support. The final vote saw 196 Democrats and 170 Republicans in favor—making it clear that more Democrats supported the measure than members of Johnson’s own party.

Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL), who opposed the bill, accused Johnson of betraying both the GOP and former President Donald Trump.

“Mike Johnson made a backroom deal with Democrat Leader Hakeem Jeffries to screw America,” Mills said in a statement, echoing the sentiments of many disillusioned Republicans.

The backlash against Johnson is not confined to his recent legislative maneuvering. Earlier this year, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) filed a motion to vacate Johnson’s position as Speaker. Though the motion was tabled with overwhelming bipartisan support—196 Republicans and 163 Democrats voted to keep Johnson in his role—it signaled cracks within the GOP’s ranks.

Reps. Massie and Paul Gosar (R-AZ) co-sponsored Greene’s motion, further highlighting the growing dissatisfaction with Johnson’s leadership.

Massie’s poll, which attracted over 166,000 responses, has amplified the pressure on Johnson. The overwhelming support for new leadership underscores the challenge he faces in maintaining unity within the Republican Party.

The timing of the poll is critical, as the House prepares to vote on its next Speaker on January 3, 2025. The results send a clear message to GOP lawmakers: voters are demanding a change.

Massie’s post included a simple question:

“On January 3rd, we will elect a Speaker of the House. Should members vote for: [Mike Johnson] or [Someone Else]?”

The response was a resounding call for new leadership, further complicating Johnson’s efforts to retain his position.

Compounding Johnson’s troubles, former President Donald Trump is reportedly reassessing his support for the Speaker. Trump had laid out specific demands for the government funding bill, which Johnson failed to deliver.

Trump’s dissatisfaction could carry significant weight, as his influence over the Republican Party remains strong. Without Trump’s backing, Johnson’s prospects for reelection as Speaker may be in serious jeopardy.

Johnson’s tenuous position is not helped by comments from House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), who has stated that Democrats will not assist Johnson in retaining his speakership.

“There will be no Democrats available to save him or the extreme MAGA Republicans from themselves,” Jeffries declared.

This statement further isolates Johnson, as he can no longer count on bipartisan support to secure his leadership.

With the January vote for Speaker fast approaching, the Republican Party faces mounting pressure to address voter discontent and realign its priorities. Johnson’s ability to navigate this turbulent landscape will likely determine his political future.

Massie’s poll has not only revealed the frustrations of GOP voters but has also intensified the scrutiny on Johnson’s leadership. For a Speaker whose tenure has already been marked by controversy, the next few weeks will be critical in determining whether he can hold onto his position—or whether the House will usher in a new era of leadership.

As Republican lawmakers weigh their options, the stakes for Johnson—and the GOP—could not be higher. Voters have made their voices heard, and the January vote will reveal whether their representatives are listening.
