Former U.S. Ambassador Rahm Emanuel says three words separate him from the rest of the Democratic field as he weighs a 2028 presidential run: “Candor, authenticity and strength.”
Emanuel made the case in an interview with Fox News Digital at the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin. His resume spans decades of Democratic power — top advisor to Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, congressman, mayor of Chicago, and most recently U.S. ambassador to Japan under President Biden.
Emanuel claims that record means he’d hit the ground running if elected. “I’m not gonna tell you what you’d like to hear. I’m gonna tell you what you need to know to make some of the tough decisions ahead,” he said. “We don’t have time anymore. We’re at a tipping point in the country. I think we’ve wasted a lot of time in the last 12 years trying to restore, as I said, a past that’s not coming back. We better think about a future that includes everybody. We don’t have a person to waste or a community to overlook and make the investments that make this country stronger.”
“And so I’m gonna be honest about it. And I think I bring a level of experience at multiple levels of government that actually, on day one, you start getting the job done. Because we don’t have a day to waste,” he added.
The pitch comes as Emanuel has repeatedly broken with his own party’s messaging. He has previously criticized the Democratic National Committee’s post-election autopsy and gone after Jill Biden, saying the party now looks “worse than feckless.” He’s also sparred publicly with a New Yorker interviewer who pressed him for not emphasizing transgender issues.
Whatever his standing inside the party establishment, Emanuel has a steep hill to climb with voters. He doesn’t crack the top 10 in the RealClearPolitics average of Democratic 2028 primary polling.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris leads that field with roughly 25% average support. California Gov. Gavin Newsom sits second at 14%, though he’s said he won’t run if Harris does. Rounding out the top tier are former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg at nearly 13%, New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez at nearly 11%, and Georgia Sen. Jon Ossoff at roughly 9%.
