Princess Michael of Kent Wore a Pretty Interesting Pin to Meghan Markle’s First Royal Event

The queen’s first cousin, Princess Michael of Kent, is embroiled in the middle of controversy for a questionable fashion choice.

The princess is nicknamed “Princess Pushy” due to her snobbish ways.  In the past, she has also allegedly made racist outbursts.

On Wednesday, the Queen hosted a Christmas lunch.  Both Princess Michael and Meghan Markle were in attendance.  The lunch was the first major royal event that Meghan Markle, Harry’s fiance, attended.

The brooch was designed in the blackamoor style.  The style romanticizes slavery.  Nowadays, it’s more than racially insensitive.  The brooch depicted an African American in a gold turban and shirt.

Through a royal representative, the Princess said she meant no harm.  She said, the brooch “was a gift and has been worn many times before. Princess Michael is very sorry and distressed that it has caused offense.”

Back in 2004, the princess reportedly told a group of African American patrons at a New York City restaurant to “go back to the colonies”.  She adamantly denied the comment to the New York Post.

Months after the incident in New York, she again denied making the slur:

I even pretended years ago to be an African, a half-caste African, but because of my light eyes I did not get away with it, but I dyed my hair black.

I had this adventure [in Africa] with these absolutely adorable, special people and to call me racist: it’s a knife through the heart because I really love these people.

Markle hasn’t responded to this particular incident.  However,  she’s discussed how her race has fit into the dynamic of her engagement.

It’s disheartening. You know, it’s a shame that that is the climate in this world to focus that much on that or that that would be discriminatory in that sense, but I think…at the end of the day, I’m really just proud of who I am and where I come from, and we have never put any focus on that. We’ve just focused on who we are as a couple.
