On Tuesday, President Trump skipped out on a fancy lunch in order to eat with the troops.

He and South Korean President Moon Jae-in decided to eat at Camp Humphreys.  They enjoyed Taco Tuesday with 108 soldiers from both South Korea and the United States.

From a White House statement, Trump said:

I had a choice of having a beautiful, very fancy lunch and I said no, I want to eat with the troops and we ate with the troops.

Sergeant Jerell Knight of Atlanta sat next to the president.  Later, he recounted how nervous he was to Stars and Stripes:

I get to meet my commander in chief, my boss. It’s pretty overwhelming to be right next to the president.

Trump thanked Sgt. Knight for his service, and he conversed with the troops about the problems in North Korea.

President Trump tweeted out a video of the lunch.  Underneath, he said, “It was my great honor to have lunch with our INCREDIBLE U.S. and ROK troops at Camp Humphreys, in South Korea.”

Since there wasn’t enough time to visit both the DMZ and Camp Humphreys that day, Trump opted to meet with the troops first.

Recently, U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, and Vice President Mike Pence all visited the DMZ.  Thus, it’s become a bit of a cliche to visit the area.

Private Merion Holmes was honored by President Trump’s presence.  He said, “He said he’d rather eat with the troops than at a fancy restaurant…it made me feel like he cared.”

Since his inauguration, President Trump has shown our military the utmost respect.  The previous administration is a stark contrast.

If former President Barack Obama had been given a choice between dining with the troops or eating at a fancy restaurant, I think we all know what he’d pick.
