‘All You Need Is A Laser’: Portland Anarchists Openly Plot Mass Attack On Federal Aircraft

I’ll explain what happened, assess the danger, criticize the local response, and argue for firm federal action. This piece focuses on facts and consequences from a law and order perspective. Expect blunt language and clear takeaways.

An online anarchist platform in Portland openly urged people to aim lasers at federal helicopters, a plan that could put pilots and civilians at real risk. The calls were explicit and tactical, instructing participants on where to stand and how to coordinate to overwhelm aircraft crews. This was not protest rhetoric, it was a plotted attempt to disable federal operations.

The post went beyond bravado. It told followers, “All you need is a laser. Leave home – they can see where the laser is coming from,” and then spelled out a plan: “Go to a park, a field, or some other public place, and once the clock strikes 9 unleash your beam at the cop copter. Mask up. Coordinate with friends to throw a laser party!”

Organizers even tried to coach people on evasion, advising the cleaning of laser pointers and methods to avoid leaving DNA on thrown items. That level of operational detail makes this a clear public safety threat, not protected political speech. It also shows organized intent to harm federal resources and personnel.

Federal authorities have already taken action in related cases, charging a person accused of aiming a laser at a Customs and Border Protection helicopter in Portland. The danger is real and documented. As an FBI agent noted in a complaint, “The laser can cause blindness and spotting in vision, making it a challenge to find other aircraft and obstacles, which could lead to a catastrophic event.”

That quote alone should end any argument that this is harmless mischief. Pilots blinded by lasers risk midair collisions and crashes, and those consequences do not respect political purpose. Anyone encouraging such behavior is flirting with catastrophic criminal liability.

Despite repeated incidents, Portland local leaders have been slow to rein in the mob. Months of anti-ICE demonstrations have created a permissive environment where chaos breeds more chaos. When city officials and state leaders prioritize optics over order, federal resources are forced to fill the gap.

Federal agencies have flagged the same anarchist outlet before for doxxing and other dangerous activity. When a group publicly posts names and addresses of federal officers, prosecutions should follow without hesitation. Law enforcement needs the tools and the political backing to pursue those responsible.

President Trump has repeatedly called for National Guard deployments to restore order in Portland, and that push is rooted in the reality of sustained unrest. Blocking federal efforts in court plays into the hands of violent agitators who want chaos to spread. Republicans who back strong responses argue that protecting citizens and federal workers is not partisan, it is duty.

Street mobs in Portland have used harassment tactics, including coercing vulnerable people to interfere with law enforcement at the ICE facility. That tactic should outrage anyone who values human dignity and safety. When protests involve coercion of the homeless and elderly, the moral case for intervention grows stronger.

The anarchist post insisted protesters should no longer tolerate “the federal regime” spying on them from helicopters, framing aircraft surveillance as a pretext for violent countermeasures. That rhetorical framing masks a raw strategy of escalation. It signals a shift from protest to tactical warfare against state institutions.

Public safety demands clarity and consequence. Federal prosecutors are already pursuing charges in laser cases, yet more enforcement is necessary given public solicitations to commit aviation crimes. Swift prosecution and visible deterrence send a necessary message that plotting to harm aircrews will not be tolerated.

Local officials in Portland must choose whether to defend rule of law or to shelter extremists. That choice matters because when local governments fail, federal actors step in to protect lives and property. Americans do not want cities turned into testing grounds for violent tactics.

Vigilance by law enforcement must be paired with common sense policies from elected leaders. That means fast-moving investigations, coordination across jurisdictions, and public messaging that condemns violent acts without equivocation. It also means support for federal deployments when local capacity is overwhelmed.

The real victims here are pilots, federal employees, and everyday Portlanders who want peace. There is no noble cause in aiming lasers at aircraft. Political disagreement is normal but plotting to injure people and disrupt government is criminal and must be treated as such.

Americans who value safety and order should demand that prosecutors act, that lawmakers stop protecting rioters, and that mayors stop making excuses. If Portland will not prioritize safety, federal steps are justified. Defending the country includes defending federal workers and the rule of law.
