Police raided two fraternity houses at West Virginia University in Morgantown on Oct. 26, hauling out bags and cases of evidence from the Lambda Chi Alpha chapter as hundreds of onlookers crowded the street outside the brick, multi-level house while loud music played.

Officers from the campus and local police department executed a search warrant tied to hazing allegations at the Lambda Chi Alpha house. West Virginia University had already placed that chapter on interim suspension on Oct. 9 following what a university spokeswoman described as “anonymous allegations of hazing.”

The same day, Oct. 26, investigators also served a search warrant at the house belonging to the university’s Pi Kappa Alpha chapter, known as PIKE, according to posts from WVU Safety and Wellness. PIKE is under investigation for hazing allegations as well, though as of that date the university had not placed the chapter on suspension.

“West Virginia University takes seriously the safety and well-being of our students,” a university spokeswoman said. “Due to the nature of the investigations, no other details will be released at this time. We will provide updates as they become available.”

The two WVU chapters join a growing list of fraternities under investigation across the country as hazing probes multiply.

Why Enforcement Is Catching Up Now

Michael Ayalon, a hazing prevention expert and CEO of Greek University, said the wave of law enforcement action doesn’t necessarily mean hazing itself is increasing. Instead, he pointed to heightened awareness driven by a change in federal law.

The Stop Campus Hazing Act, passed in December 2024 with bipartisan support, requires greater transparency around hazing allegations nationwide.

“We certainly are seeing increased visibility and scrutiny of hazing on college campuses, particularly as universities face greater expectations for transparency and accountability. With that transparency and accountability comes greater visibility,” Ayalon said.

But more visibility, he said, does not mean more hazing is happening now — the behavior has long gone underreported because students fear retaliation.

Ayalon warned that the string of investigations is damaging public perception of Greek life broadly.

“The positive contributions of thousands of fraternity members can get overshadowed by allegations involving a handful of chapters,” Ayalon said. “So every hazing incident makes it harder for the good chapters to go out and recruit more new members, makes it harder for alumni to defend the fraternity experience, and it makes it harder for universities that are working with these organizations. For students, I think this is a wake-up call.”

Ayalon said some chapters still cling to the belief that hazing is a necessary rite of passage, despite decades of warnings, policy changes, and deaths tied to the practice.

“I had to go through it, so you have to go through it, too,” is how he described the flawed reasoning members use to justify the abuse.

“There is a profound difference between working through a meaningful challenge as equals and being humiliated or controlled by people who hold power over you,” he said.

Ayalon noted hazing tends to follow patterns by organization type. In historically white IFC fraternities, forced alcohol consumption is common — 82% of hazing deaths involve it, he said. In historically white Panhellenic sororities, hazing more often takes the form of psychological abuse and exclusionary behavior toward new members. In historically Black fraternities and sororities of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, often called the Divine Nine, abuse can be physical or mental, he said, and some recent high-profile cases nationally have involved drugs.
