A Phoenix man who was transitioning to live as a woman has pleaded guilty to murdering hiker Lauren Heike, 29, in a 2023 stabbing attack that left her with 15 wounds, including defensive injuries to her hands and forearms.

Zion Teasley, 25, admitted to killing Heike while she was hiking a trail near his home. The two did not know each other, but DNA found on her shoe matched Teasley, who had a prior criminal record and was on probation after serving time for armed robbery and other offenses. He was seen on surveillance footage running from the scene.

According to the New York Post, Teasley wrote in a diary before the killing that he was struggling with his gender identity and sexuality and found it difficult to reconcile that struggle with living a Christian life. He told others he became depressed when he saw beautiful women because he felt trapped in a man’s body.

When police first interviewed him, Teasley denied ever having seen Heike except on the news. He then made a striking remark to officers about her appearance.

“That’s what I would want to look like.”

Court records show Teasley was recently fired before the murder after allegations he behaved aggressively toward female coworkers and was suspected of theft. A former employer told police he recognized Teasley in surveillance video wearing clothing stolen from the business.

In addition to the murder charge, Teasley pleaded guilty to one count of sexual exploitation of a minor for possessing child pornography. A separate 2020 burglary charge was dismissed as part of the plea agreement.

Neighbors discovered Heike’s body and recognized her as a regular hiker who lived in the area, according to Fox 10.

The plea deal means Teasley will avoid the death penalty. Heike’s family said they supported the arrangement because it spares them a trial and the ordeal of hearing detailed testimony about their daughter’s murder.

Court records list Teasley as a former member of the U.S. Marine Corps. A statement from the Marines clarified that Teasley entered recruit training in 2019 but separated before completing boot camp. No further details were released, citing privacy reasons.
