A Philadelphia police officer was shot and killed and his partner was critically wounded early Saturday morning after the two were ambushed while responding to a report of a person with a gun.

The attack happened just past midnight. Both officers were shot multiple times and rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery.

Officer Shane Seiber, 40, was shot three times and did not survive surgery. His wife and family reached the hospital in time to be with him before he died. Seiber leaves behind a 7-year-old son and a 3-year-old daughter.

The second officer was shot 12 times and remains hospitalized.

The suspect fled the scene after the shooting and climbed into a tree in an attempt to hide from responding officers. He eventually came down and surrendered to a SWAT team.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel praised the department’s officers in the aftermath of the attack.

“I am so damn proud of the men and women who serve in this department. Consistently, they go into danger, and they give their lives for this job. And so we ask for those prayers, and we ask for you to support our men and women out there, and what they give for this profession.”
