NNSA Reclaims Cobalt-60 From Guatemala, Secures US Homeland

The U.S. quietly removed a high-activity cobalt-60 source from a disused medical device in Guatemala and brought it back to secure storage in America, a targeted move to keep dangerous radioactive material out of the wrong hands. The operation involved U.S. nuclear experts, Guatemalan partners, and Defense Threat Reduction Agency transport, and it highlights a tougher stance on radiological threats under the current administration.

Officials identified the radioactive piece as cobalt-60, a medical isotope used in cancer treatment that becomes a major security risk if it ends up in the hands of criminals or terrorists. When removed from an old teletherapy machine, that same source can be repurposed to spread contamination if someone decided to build a radiological dispersal device. The reality is simple: devices meant to heal can become tools of harm if they are not safeguarded properly.

The operation began in May with specialists from Los Alamos working directly with the Guatemalan facility to extract the cobalt-60 component from a U.S.-origin teletherapy unit. Guatemalan authorities provided logistical support, transportation, and on-site security to make the transfer safe and efficient. Coordination like this cuts risk and proves that strong partnerships get dangerous materials out of vulnerable places.

The effort also ties directly to the administration’s national security priorities, which emphasize stopping terrorists from gaining chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear capabilities. The 2026 Counterterrorism Strategy names preventing the acquisition of such weapons as a core U.S. responsibility, and actions like this removal are a practical expression of that policy. Republicans argue this kind of real-world muscle matters more than talk; it keeps communities safe and shows deterrence works.

“Our mission is simple: protect American citizens, secure our borders, and ensure our adversaries never get their hands on materials that could harm our country,” Matthew Napoli, deputy administrator for the NNSA’s Office of Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation, said. That line captures the blunt, no-nonsense approach officials are taking when it comes to radiological security. It’s about preventing catastrophe before it starts, not scrambling after an attack.

“This successful removal is a massive win for homeland security and demonstrates our positive relationship with the Guatemalan government. NNSA will do whatever it takes to defend America and keep our communities safe,” Napoli added. The praise is earned: the teams physically packaged the cobalt-60 source, following strict protocols to prevent exposure or diversion. Those precautions are tedious but necessary when you’re handling material that could poison people or be used to terrorize a city.

“Thanks to our collaboration with NNSA and DTRA in removing high-risk radioactive material from our facility, we were able to eliminate the danger it posed to our community and country,” Mayra Villatoro, head of the Unit of Technical Laboratories at Guatemala’s Ministry of Energy and Mines, said. Local officials took a direct role and rightly pointed to the community benefit of losing a potential hazard. When partners cooperate, risk drops and stability rises.

After secure packaging, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency provided transportation back to the U.S., completing the chain of custody and ensuring the source landed in secure storage. “The successful repatriation of the cobalt-60 source is a product of vital U.S. Government interagency cooperation,” Robert Bridges, DTRA program manager of Nuclear Transportation & Disposition, said. “We are proud to work with NNSA to take meaningful action in their mission to eliminate radiological risk and keep America safe.”

The operation falls under the NNSA Office of Radiological Security’s ongoing effort to find and remove high-activity sources and strengthen safeguards around them. These missions are practical counterterrorism work: track the vulnerable sources, secure them, and remove them from places where theft or neglect could lead to disaster. That steady, operational work is the kind of responsible government action voters expect when threats to public safety are on the line.
