Abortion rates have surged by 90% in New York, a grim milestone in the nation’s abortion capital. According to a recent report, 2023 marked a record high for abortion in the state, with over 130,000 procedures performed—a staggering increase from the previous year. This trend aligns with the nation’s first full year in a post-Roe America, as pro-life state restrictions inadvertently push women toward abortion tourism hubs like New York or toward the use of dangerous, unregulated abortion pills.

Historically, New York has been a bellwether for abortion policies and trends in the United States. The Guttmacher Institute’s analysis underscores this, with New York’s abortion numbers climbing to their highest since the state legalized abortion in 1970. Unsurprisingly, this trend reflects a broader national uptick, with over one million abortions reported nationwide in 2023—the highest number in a decade.

Much of this increase is attributed to chemical abortions, often referred to as “medical” abortions. These procedures involve taking pills to terminate a pregnancy, bypassing the need for surgical intervention. Preliminary data indicates that chemical abortions in New York rose by 27% in 2022 compared to 2021. By 2023, they accounted for nearly half of all abortions in the state.

Chemical abortion is at the core of New York’s staggering abortion increase, responsible for 71% of the overall rise in New York City alone. County-by-county data shows significant jumps:

  • The Bronx: Up 25% (from 8,799 to 10,976)
  • Kings (Brooklyn): Up 18% (from 11,856 to 14,019)
  • Queens: Up 19% (from 8,756 to 10,442)
  • New York (Manhattan): Up 25% (from 5,509 to 6,875)

These numbers likely underestimate the full impact, as they exclude abortion tourism—procedures performed on out-of-state women who travel to New York—or abortion pills illegally mailed across state lines.

The rise of chemical abortions is no accident. The abortion industry began pivoting toward this method as early as 2019, anticipating the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade. Chemical abortions are easier to distribute and harder to regulate, making them a go-to option for circumventing restrictions in pro-life states.

However, these pills come with significant risks, including hemorrhaging, infection, and incomplete abortions, yet they are often marketed as safe and convenient. Critics argue this approach prioritizes accessibility over women’s health and safety.

Pro-life organizations like CompassCare have been preparing for this shift. Recognizing the growing reliance on chemical abortion, CompassCare built a TeleCare nursing team to reach women online, providing education about the dangers of abortion pills and offering alternatives. The group also provides access to abortion pill reversal, a treatment designed to halt the effects of the first dose of the abortion regimen.

CompassCare’s work extends to building physical infrastructure in New York’s abortion hubs, including cities like Buffalo, Albany, Brooklyn, and The Bronx. Their mission is to provide women with life-affirming choices, including free medical care and community support, as an alternative to abortion.

However, pro-life medical centers face mounting opposition in New York. Attorney General Letitia James has targeted these centers, accusing them of misleading women—a claim CompassCare and similar organizations vehemently deny.

The post-Roe landscape has redrawn the battle lines of the abortion debate. While pro-life states implement restrictions to save lives within their borders, abortion-friendly states like New York become havens for abortion tourism and the distribution of abortion pills.

Critics argue that state-by-state regulations, though well-intentioned, create a patchwork system that fails to address the root causes of abortion. Advocates for life stress the need for a unified, national strategy to protect both women and their unborn children.

Pro-life leaders view the current moment as an opportunity to double down on their efforts. CompassCare’s vision is ambitious: to become the busiest pro-life medical network in the country, helping twice as many women in 2025 as they did in 2024.

“This is why God put CompassCare in the heart of America’s abortion capital,” the organization said in a statement. “The future is pro-life, and we will continue to serve one woman and one baby at a time.”

As the battle over abortion continues, pro-life advocates remain steadfast in their commitment to saving lives. Their work serves as a beacon of hope in a society grappling with the moral and ethical implications of abortion, offering a vision of a future where every life is valued and protected.
