Netflix has greenlit an Untold documentary on Daejon Love, the 35-year-old man accused of posing as a San Francisco 49ers wide receiver to swindle women out of more than $1.3 million. The film is titled “Untold: Wide Deceiver” and will include interviews with victims of the scheme.
Federal prosecutors say Love and an 18-year-old accomplice, Taylor Jamie Chan, used Tinder, Bumble, Hinge and Facebook Dating to find targets across California, Oregon and Washington.
Love didn’t just claim to be a pro athlete. He built an entire fake football career to back it up. He staged workout videos, including clips of himself running routes on public beaches while wearing a replica 49ers helmet, to convince women he played for the team.
In one video, Love staged a mock contract signing with the Niners, showed off team gear and said on camera, “Niners, you already know, Niner gang.” When pressed on why he wasn’t appearing on the active roster, he blamed an allegedly injured finger.
He also used an AI-generated Google search result that falsely listed him as a 49ers receiver, posting it to Instagram with the line, “That’s Google. That’s not me, that’s Google.”
Once women believed Love was both an NFL player and a real estate investor, he pushed them to take out high-interest personal loans to fund investment programs he claimed would pay off. Prosecutors say none of that money was ever invested. Instead, Love spent it on luxury cars, designer jewelry and vacations meant to keep the illusion of wealth alive for his next target. When a victim ran out of money or started asking financial questions, he cut her off.
The scheme ended in August when the FBI arrested Love and Chan at an airport in Boise, Idaho. Love was indicted on federal conspiracy and wire fraud charges, and the FBI has identified dozens of victims across multiple states.
Love has pleaded not guilty and remains held without bail. His federal jury trial is scheduled for Dec. 15.
