A North Carolina state representative resigned after being charged with serious felonies involving an alleged sexual encounter with a minor, prompting swift calls for accountability and a criminal case that will play out in court while political leaders position themselves for what comes next.

Rep. Cecil Brockman of High Point announced he is stepping down from the North Carolina House of Representatives, saying the legal fight demands his full attention and prevents him from serving his constituents. The resignation follows public pressure and an announced House committee inquiry into the accusations. Republicans and Democrats both called for action, and the resignation removes the immediate need for an expulsion battle.

“I am currently facing criminal charges brought against me in Guilford County. Due to the seriousness of these accusations, I need to focus on my defense of these allegations,” Brockman, 41, said in a statement obtained by WXII. “As a result, I am unable to fulfill my duty and service to my constituents in Guilford County. As a result, I am resigning my position from the NC House of Representatives effective immediately.”

Court records list multiple counts against Brockman, including two counts of statutory rape of a child between the ages of 13 and 15 and two counts of indecent liberties with a child. Those are grave allegations that trigger both criminal consequences and political fallout. Authorities and the public will be watching the legal process closely as the case moves forward.

A magistrate’s order alleges Brockman engaged in sex acts with a 15-year-old in August and says he is twice alleged to have committed and attempted to commit “a lewd and lascivious act” upon the juvenile. Other court documents report he allegedly tried to contact the alleged victim while they were hospitalized and sought to “use his status to gain information on the whereabouts of the victim.” Those details add a disturbing layer to the charges and raise questions about misuse of position.

North Carolina House Speaker Destin Hall said Brockman’s decision “is the right thing to do for his constituents and for the North Carolina House of Representatives.” “His departure spares the House from a difficult expulsion process and brings closure to this troubling chapter,” Hall added, according to WXII. Leadership presented the resignation as a way to move past a divisive episode while the justice system takes over.

Brockman was first elected in 2014 and had served since 2015, representing parts of High Point and Guilford County and sitting on education and appropriations committees. His long tenure in the state House means the allegations and resignation are a jolt to familiar local representation. Voters and party officials will now need to fill both the vacancy and the trust gap left behind.

Records show Brockman remained in jail on a bond set at just over $1 million, and a hearing on a request by his attorney to reduce that bond is scheduled for Monday. The sizable bond underlines how seriously magistrates treated the charges when setting pretrial conditions. The court schedule and any evidence that emerges will shape next steps in both the legal case and the political calendar.

From a Republican perspective, events like this underscore the need for steady leadership and clear standards for behavior in public office. With a vacancy opening in a district Democrats have long held, GOP operatives will see an opportunity to contest the seat in upcoming special election or under new district lines. Yet the immediate priority remains the safety of minors and fidelity to the rule of law as investigators and prosecutors pursue the case.

The coming days will sort out bond hearings, potential motions and the timeline for the criminal case, while local officials organize how to replace a representative abruptly gone. Voters deserve transparency and a system that protects children while upholding due process for anyone facing criminal charges.
