Third Suspect Charged After Montgomery Nightlife Shooting Killed 2, Injured 12

MONTGOMERY, Ala. Authorities announced Thursday that a third person has been arrested and charged in a violent early-October shooting that left two people dead and 12 others wounded in a crowded downtown nightlife district.

Police identified the suspect as Javorick Whiting, 19, and said he faces an attempted murder charge.

The shooting erupted on a busy evening when bars and restaurants were full, and witnesses described chaos as patrons fled the area.

Emergency personnel and law enforcement quickly responded, treating the injured and closing off parts of the scene while they gathered preliminary evidence.

Montgomery police provided limited details about how Whiting was located or what evidence led to the charge, saying the investigation remains active and ongoing.

Investigators are sorting through surveillance, witness statements and forensic leads to piece together who did what.

Forensic work, including ballistics and DNA tests, can take time to process but often provides the most direct links between suspects and scenes. That work, coupled with witness accounts and digital footage, will likely shape the prosecution’s case.

Local businesses told reporters they were reviewing their security footage and cooperating with detectives, and some said they had already increased visible security. Staff training and customer safety measures were being discussed to help rebuild confidence in the district.

An attempted murder charge signals prosecutors believe there was intent to cause serious harm, and it’s treated as a major felony. Attempted murder prosecutions often hinge on proving intent, which can be shown through statements, actions, or the circumstances that surround an attack.

Before a trial, the case goes through arraignment and pretrial motions where both sides trade evidence and jockey over legal issues. Those steps can stretch the process for weeks or months.

Officials have confirmed two fatalities and a dozen injuries but have declined to release victim names while families are notified and medical details are sorted. Local hospitals treated people for a range of wounds, and business owners in the downtown corridor said the mood has been tense in the days following the violence.

The third arrest follows earlier detentions related to the same incident, though police have not publicly released details about the other suspects or the charges they face. Community-supplied footage and tips have been crucial in similar cases, officials said, as detectives combine those leads with forensic analysis to strengthen prosecutions.

Authorities urged anyone with video, eyewitness information or other details to contact investigators, noting that even small pieces of information can help establish a timeline.

Whiting is 19; his arrest shows how young people can face life-changing consequences.

Court dates have not been announced publicly and prosecutors will need to file formal charges and present evidence before a judge to set the next steps. Until those filings appear, much of the procedural timeline will remain uncertain.

The shooting has prompted renewed calls for vigilance and cooperation with law enforcement from neighborhood groups and downtown stakeholders. Many residents said they wanted quick answers and stronger preventive measures to keep nights out safe.

Investigators said the probe is ongoing and that they will release more information when doing so does not jeopardize the case or the privacy of victims and witnesses.
