With 14 days until Michigan voters decide a open U.S. Senate seat, the governor’s office, and every congressional seat on the ballot, a top House Republican is accusing Democrats of abandoning their own name.

Rep. Lisa McClain, R-Mich. (MI-09), the House GOP Conference Chair, made the remark during a Fox News town hall hosted by Sean Hannity. “I don’t even call them Democrats anymore; it’s the Communist Party,” McClain said. “They want to pack the Supreme Court, they want to abolish the police, they want to let people out of prisons.”

McClain is campaigning alongside Rep. John James, R-Mich. (MI-10), the GOP nominee for governor, who is running to succeed term-limited Democrat Gretchen Whitmer. Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is the Democratic nominee in that race.

In the Senate contest, Republican Mike Rogers, a former congressman and FBI agent, faces Democrat Abdul El-Sayed for the seat currently held by retiring Democrat Sen. Gary Peters. El-Sayed has drawn national attention for outperforming expectations in a race Republicans see as central to maintaining their Senate majority.

Michigan is often described as a blue state, but Donald Trump carried it in 2024 by close to 80,000 votes statewide. Democratic strongholds like Detroit and Dearborn remain critical to the party’s hopes of holding the seats up for grabs this cycle.

The outcome in Michigan will help determine whether Republicans keep control of Congress for the remainder of President Trump’s term.
