Mexico apparently thinks it can play both sides of the Russian-Ukraine war. The Mexican President condemned Putin’s attack on Ukraine semi-publicly but refused to apply sanctions against Russia or freeze assets.
The Hill:
“Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said on Tuesday his country won’t impose economic sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.
“We are not going to take any sort of economic reprisal because we want to have good relations with all the governments in the world,” López Obrador said at his daily news conference.
López Obrador was internally criticized for his reluctance to condemn the unprovoked invasion, with initial official Mexican reactions calling for dialogue between the parties.”
Meanwhile, other countries, including the US, have frozen Russian assets, seized property, and applied stiff sanctions.
It gets worse. Here’s why I think we need to close our borders and launch a probe into anyone who has crossed:
“The announcement from López Obrador came just a day after he and the Mexican tourism minister said that Mexico would not follow the EU in blocking Russian airlines from landing at airports in the country, according to Mexico News Daily. Over the weekend, Tourism Minister Miguel Torruco also posted a widely criticized series of tweets showcasing various statistics about Russian tourism in Mexico and the money that has come into the country related to tourism from Russia.
The Mexican president also criticized what he considered to be censorship of Russian state-owned media, as Facebook, Twitter, Google, Reddit and YouTube have all taken steps in recent days to combat misinformation or propaganda regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, including halting advertising revenue from being distributed to several Russian state-owned outlets.”
US borders are practically wide open to a country that supports a US enemy. Not just any enemy, but Putin. The guy who just directly threatened an attack on the US if they interfere with the Ukraine invasion. Do I really need to argue much more on why the hell that should concern you?
