Graham Platner suspended his Maine Senate campaign after multiple explosive allegations of sexual misconduct and a flurry of high‑profile defections. Top Democrats, party leaders and some former backers publicly urged him to step aside, and his exit came just before a legal deadline that allows the Maine Democratic Party to name a replacement. The sudden collapse reshapes a close race against Susan Collins and leaves the party scrambling to regroup.

Platner, long a populist voice who drew an early boost from Sen. Bernie Sanders, had been running as an outsider against incumbent Sen. Susan Collins. His campaign surged through the primary despite prior controversies, but the narrative shifted abruptly when accusations of sexual assault surfaced in national reporting. “For the movement to continue, it can’t be me. For that reason, we are suspending campaign operations,” Platner said in a video posted to social media.

The timing of the suspension mattered politically and legally; it came five days before a deadline that would have prevented Democrats from replacing him on the general election ballot. Party officials moved quickly to determine how to select a new nominee and to meet the state’s replacement cutoff. That logistical pressure added urgency to calls for him to step aside immediately.

One of the central allegations came from Jenny Racicot, who told CNN’s Jake Tapper that “by dictionary definition” Platner “raped” her. Racicot described an encounter she says happened five years ago and later recounted details to multiple outlets and people she dated afterward. Her accounts, including correspondence with a therapist and corroboration by a man she dated, were reported by national outlets and intensified scrutiny on Platner.

“I thought, here’s a man who was drunk and who, by dictionary definition, raped me. And he’s blaming drunk women,” Racicot said. She also pointed to public comments Platner made about women and sexual violence as part of why she came forward when she did. “I just want the truth out there,” Racicot added, seeking to give voters a fuller picture.

Racicot told another outlet, “I remember him grabbing my pelvis and being really forceful of me,” and described an episode she says left her feeling she had lost control over consent. Those claims were met with a categorical denial from Platner, who said the accusations were false. “These allegations are troubling, serious, and false. Any accusation of non-consensual behavior is categorically untrue,” he told reporters.

The Platner campaign also shortly after the Politico story published where Platner again called the allegations “false” and that he was going to “reflect” on the best path forward. “So, regardless of the inaccuracy of the reporting, but mindful the political reality it will inflict, we are taking the time to reflect on the best path forward for the state that I love, the people that I love, the movement I belong to, and the goal of defeating Susan Collins,” Platner says in the video.

A second allegation from Lyndsey Fifield accused Platner of removing condoms during sex and of past physical misconduct while they dated. In response, the campaign said those charges were “categorically false and politically motivated” and pointed to Fifield’s prior professional ties as context for their skepticism. The competing versions of events left voters and party leaders wrestling with credibility and timing.

Platner’s rise had not been free of controversy before these accusations: inflammatory online posts tied to a deleted Reddit account, questions about a now-covered tattoo that drew comparisons to a Nazi symbol, and reports of explicit messages surfaced during the primary. He acknowledged mistakes, apologized publicly for past posts, and framed his candidacy as a chance to change politics and his life.

The fallout drew rapid political consequences. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called the reported allegations “incredibly disturbing – violence, abuse and sexual assault are absolutely unacceptable.” Schumer and DSCC Chair Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand urged immediate withdrawal, writing, “Graham Platner needs to immediately withdraw as the Democratic nominee for Senate and allow Maine Democrats the opportunity to choose a new candidate who can defeat Susan Collins. The DSCC will not invest in the Maine Senate race if Platner remains on the ballot.”

Major donors and groups shifted resources away, and the Maine Democratic Party publicly demanded he step down. Rep. Ro Khanna rescinded his endorsement, writing, “I’ve been very clear that sexual assault or violence against women is a red line. These allegations are very serious and credible. Graham Platner should drop out from the race. I am withdrawing my endorsement.” Other progressive backers followed suit or withdrew support.

Even Sen. Sanders, who had backed Platner early, urged him to step aside, saying, “I have spoken with Graham Platner about the best path forward for Maine. In light of these very serious allegations, I have recommended that he step aside.” That recommendation carried weight with activists and donors who had propelled Platner to the nomination.

With the 5 p.m. withdrawal deadline looming, Platner left the field before that cutoff, enabling the state party to name a replacement nominee by July 27. Had he missed the deadline, Democrats would have faced a worse predicament: an unreplaceable name on the ballot. The abrupt vacancy forces Maine Democrats into a compressed, high‑stakes decision as the general election approaches and national attention remains fixed on the seat.
