Luka Doncic bought out an entire parking lot outside Crypto.com Arena ahead of the Lakers’ season opener against the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday night, giving fans free parking for the game. He also teamed up with Metro Bike Share to offer free bike rides across Los Angeles for the entire day.
The move landed before Doncic even took the court, and it came as the Lakers officially moved on from the LeBron James era. James has departed the franchise for his 24th NBA season, leaving Doncic as the unquestioned face of the team.
Anyone who has driven into downtown Los Angeles on a game night knows the parking racket well. Paying roughly 50 dollars to park a car for a few hours on cracked pavement is standard, and it can sour an evening before fans even reach the arena doors. Doncic’s gesture erased that cost for fans attending the opener.
The generosity stopped at the gate, however. Concession prices inside Crypto.com Arena remain untouched, with a draft beer running 20 dollars and a soda costing 10 dollars. A family of four heading to a game is still looking at a significant bill once they clear security, free parking or not.
Still, the gesture made the point plainly: this is now Doncic’s team. For years the Lakers were built around James, with all the roster churn and celebrity attention that came with it. With James gone, the franchise belongs to Doncic.
Doncic enters the new season coming off a hamstring injury that cut his 2025-26 campaign short. He takes the floor against Golden State carrying the weight of the franchise’s 17 championship banners and plenty to prove after last year’s setback.
Free parking and bike rides build goodwill with fans, but for Doncic and the Lakers, nothing matters beyond winning banner number 18. Wednesday’s opener against the Warriors is only the first step.
