As Vice President Kamala Harris prepares to potentially run for president, liberal media organizations are putting in extra effort to reshape her image, especially regarding her contentious time as the “border czar.”
This rush to gloss over her history coincides with increasing scrutiny from Republicans about her management of the border crisis.
WATCH:
At the start of the Biden administration, Harris was given the responsibility of addressing the underlying reasons for migration from Central and South America.
This duty has become a focal point for criticism from the GOP as states struggle to manage the persistent flow of migrants.
However, major media organizations such as ABC, CNN, MSNBC, The New York Times, TIME magazine, and Axios have started to distance her from the title of “border czar.”
The New York Times took the lead with a July 17 article titled “Why Republicans Keep Calling Kamala Harris the ‘Border Czar,’” which was released during the Republican National Convention.

Reporters Jazmine Ulloa and Nicholas Nehamas claimed, “Ms. Harris was not, in fact, appointed border czar, nor was she tasked with addressing the broader problems plaguing the border itself.” They argued that Harris was only responsible for tackling the “root causes” of migration, such as drug violence and economic instability in countries like Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras.
Axios joined the narrative shift with an article by Stef W. Kight lamenting how “Harris border confusion haunts her new campaign.” Kight wrote, “The Trump campaign and Republicans have tagged Harris repeatedly with the ‘border czar’ title — which she never actually had.”
However, Kight’s own previous reporting contradicts this, as she once wrote, “President Biden is putting Vice President Harris in charge of addressing the migrant surge at the U.S.-Mexico border.”

The response was immediate and forceful. Social media platform X, using Community Notes, called attention to Axios’s prior use of the term “border czar” in reference to Harris. In a moment of embarrassment, Axios released an editor’s note acknowledging their previous incorrect usage of the term.
The media fix is in:
– Axios deletes calling Harris the border czar
– GovTrack deletes calling Harris the most liberal Senator
– Harris was a shining example of DEI; now calling her a “DEI candidate” is false and racist pic.twitter.com/s4fLon6rj5— John LeFevre (@JohnLeFevre) July 24, 2024
NEW: "Fact-Checker" @PolitiFact has issued a fact check stating the claim that Kamala Harris was the border czar is "Mostly False."
This is called propaganda.

TIME magazine’s Vera Bergengruen also jumped on the bandwagon with an article titled, “Kamala Harris Was Never Biden’s ‘Border Czar.’ Here’s What She Really Did.”
TIME expressed the view that Harris was primarily involved in diplomatic efforts in Central America, despite her widely criticized “do not come” message to Guatemalans.
The liberal media’s efforts to downplay Harris’s role as “border czar” is a blatant attempt to protect her from the consequences of the Biden administration’s border shortcomings.
